The joy of tobacco usage.

Now for the fun filled facts kiddos.  Consider this before you grab that next pack:

  • Every day in the United States alone, approximately 3,000 kids under the age of 18 start smoking.
  • Every day 1,200 Americans die from smoking-related illnesses.
  • Teen smokers get sick more often than teens who don’t smoke.
  • Teen smokers have smaller lungs and weaker hearts than teens who don’t smoke.
  • Teen smokers are more likely to use alcohol and other drugs.
  • Addicted smokers tend to use more nicotine over time. The habit usually grows. What starts out as 5 or 10 cigarettes a day usually becomes a pack or two a day habit eventually.
  • It is estimated that approximately 4.5 million adolescents in the United States are smokers.
  • Spit tobacco, pipes and cigars are not safe alternatives to cigarettes. “Light” or “low-tar” cigarettes aren’t safe either.
  • Those who start smoking young are more likely to have a long-term addiction to nicotine than people who start smoking later in life.
  • Smoking-related illnesses claim more American lives than alcohol, car accidents, suicide, AIDS, homicide and illegal drugs combined.(1)
  • People who smoke a pack a day die on average 7 years earlier than people who have never smoked.
  • Smoking is the single most preventable cause of premature death in the United States.(2)

If that’s not enough for you, try some health facts that are painful just listening to, kids.

  • Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general.
  • Quitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving health in general.
  • Smoking cigarettes with lower machine-measured yields of tar and nicotine provides no clear benefit to health.
  • The list of diseases caused by smoking has been expanded to include abdominal aortic aneurysm, acute myeloid leukemia, cataract, cervical cancer, kidney cancer, pancreatic cancer, pneumonia, periodontitis, and stomach cancer. These are in addition to diseases previously known to be caused by smoking, including bladder, esophageal, laryngeal, lung, oral, and throat cancers, chronic lung diseases, coronary heart and cardiovascular diseases, as well as reproductive effects and sudden infant death syndrome

Most importantly, there are no safe tobacco alternatives to cigarettes, chewing tobacco and snuff are both just as lethal.

Remember, I’m not going to be a hypocrite as a tobacco user myself, and tell anyone what they should or shouldn’t do.  Just please consider these facts.

I hope you’re more informed, tobacco companies don’t care about making you feel good, they want your money.  New smokers are going to get a major buzz their first few times, (of course they should, drinking ammonia and sitting in the closed garage with the car running would fuck you up, right?), but soon that turns into an addiction.  Eventually those cigarettes do nothing more than make you feel normal.  It’s a sad thing when you need to smoke a shit stick to not feel bad.

Cigarette advertising may be the only thing more scumbag than the ingredients themselves.  Flashy colors, vivid descriptions such as “smooth and delicious” couldn’t be further from the truth.  I don’t consider a smokers cough and swallowing smoking phlegm too delightful myself.

It’s easier to quit if you don’t start in the first place.

Aren't all these points hypocritical as you've already admitted that you smoke yourself?

by Snowskate to Destiny on Mon, 2007-02-26 19:19
Now I'm glad I'm too much of a pussy to smoke.

Have you ever met a smoker who's told you not to start smoking, because they started and now they can't stop?

I guess it's sort of like that here, only he is just telling us things to discourage anybody from starting.

I wouldn't say he's being a hypocrite, cause that shit is addicting, and it really is hard to stop.

by MightyStag on Mon, 2007-02-26 22:57
I prefer a cigar once in a blue moon. And the best way for me to not get addicted is to not buy them. I figure the next time I'll smoke is when I graduate.

i stopped after 7th grade.

by lpescato on Tue, 2007-02-27 08:52
Yeah, well from one smoker to a "non-smoker": When I am at the skatepark and smoking, don't try to bum one off me because you "normally don't smoke" or "never buy them". Especially if you're obviously under 18. They're 4 dollars a pack so I am not giving you any.

Actually, I quit partly due to this research.

by Empi on Tue, 2007-02-27 12:45
I feel like putting up a smoky right now
I don't care that cigarettes are bad for the health, I'm more ashamed of the fact that my money goes to some paper and tobacco that only pasts for 2 minutes
