The winter Olympics have just started and in the spirit, I came across an article on skateboarding in the Olympics, a debated topic for a long time.
Check it out http://skateboard.about.com/od/events/a/Olympics.htm

I dont want skateboarding to turn into a sport
Then we will be Jocks..
And that s not good.
I say each country should have its own skate team, but it shouldnt be in the olympics and they should start a new organization for it Like The World Skateboarding Comission.
So if it becomes an olympic sport, true skaters will be able to distance themselves from that, and still "keep it real"(for lack of a better term) and stay true to what it was about.
Look at snowboarding, it's in the Winter Olympics(which doesn't get the same recognition as the Summer Olympics, but it's still similar) and there's plenty of snowboarders out there who have the stance of "**** that crap who cares? Just snowboard for the fun of it" and they stick to what its about.
It's the same as what MTV did to music. despite the fact every genre ever got made into a mainstrem marketing gimmick... there are still bands out there doing it for the right reasons and staying true to what ideals those styles of music stood for.
So as long as there is still the core of skaters who stick to what it is really about, and skate for the right reasons, and just get out there and have fun, true skating will never die.
Also ( I cannot remeber who stated this, it was a Melbourne based pro, this 'quote' is not exact) "...to keep the global juggernaut in check we need to keep supporting the real skater owned skate companies.." Becasue we all know if it becomes an olympic sport every brand on earth will start making skatebaords and skate epuiment, and the honest companies will suffer, so we need to keep the real companies alive, and support them.
In short, if the core of "true" skaters keep supporting the right brands, the ma and pa shops, and keep sakting the streets lookign for new spots and skating for the love of skating... We can keep skating alive and well.
Baseball isn't even in the Olympics. So there for you've heard wrong.
Or made that up.
