Double Heelflip

By Iskatehard at 2009-07-19 21:47

Introduction

Alright, the double heelflip... That's pretty self explanatory isn't it? It's a heelflip.. But it flips around twice rather than once. It's a pretty neat little trick and is nice to throw down once in a while to break the pace of all the usual double kickflips people do. If you need help figuring this one out, this guide is for you.

What You Need to Know

Tricks You Should Know:

Obviously you're going to need to know a heelflip before trying a DOUBLE heelflip. Hopefully before you start trying these you'll have a solid heel and be comfortable doing it.

What You May Find Useful:

These can be a bit odd at first.. Perhaps if you have a hard time with these, and you don't already know double kickflips, you should try those? While it's different, it helps you get use to letting the board flip twice under you, so it's worth some time concerning this trick.

Doing The Trick

Positioning:
  • The back foot
Your back foot on this one will work best if you just place it like you would for a regular heelflip. Just like the regular heel also, the back foot placement is very important in making this trick work.

  • The front foot
You'll likely wanna lower your front foot down the board a bit than you would for a normal heel. I'd suggest placing it between halfway an 3/4th of the way up the board.. Try some different placements to figure out which you prefer most.
Motion:

Give yourself some pushes and set your feet up, and you're ready.

  1. Snap your tail against the ground to get this trick started. Now, you're going to want to pop this one a little harder than you would for a regular heelflip.. But don't over do it and make this one a bitch to control.

  2. As you snap your tail, drag your front foot up the board and flip out like you would for a heelflip. Now obviously, since you're doing a double flip, you're going to have to flip out a good bit harder than usual. And it's incredibly important you flip out right on that little dip in the deck before the nose. Missing that spot will make it incredibly hard to get both flips done. While you're doing this, make sure you keep some of your weight forward and stay over your board.

  3. Once the double flip motion begins, suck your legs up and out of the way. Watch your board under you and as it begins to finish the second heelflip, begin lowering your legs to catch your feet on it over the bolts.

  4. If all goes well, you'll back on your board and landing on the ground. Absorb impact as needed and ride this one out. Congratulations on the land!
Video Trick Tips:

Troubleshooting

This is a weird trick in ways.. It can be sort of hard figuring it all out, so don't stress it too much. If you have problems, check below:

  • I can't finish the flipping before I land
Yeah, the most common problem with this trick is not getting the full flip motion completed. If you're having problems with it though, it's alright and can likely be worked out fairly easily. First thing you need to do is MAKE SURE you're flipping out in that little groove of the board right before the nose. If you're not doing that, focus on doing so and try it again.

If you're flipping it at the right spot and still coming short.. You probably will just want to simply try adding a little more force into your front foot to finish it out. Also, when you're over your board in your air, try to keep your legs sucked up a little longer. This trick really does take longer to finish than most that you probably know, so you have to hang up there and wait for it.

  • The board is too un-leveled when I start the flip
This can be a problem, and can really mess up your chances of having this trick lookin' good. Don't stress though, since it's not a hard thing to fix. What you need to do is make sure you lean forward a bit upon flipping your foot out and keep your weight as even as possible. Also, if you can, try moving your front foot a little closer to the nose.

  • The board gets away from me
If it is getting away from you.. It's probably your back foot. Make sure it's positioned correctly and you're not popping it too hard to control. Also, check to see if you're kicking it out. If you don't get a clean kick out with your front foot on this trick, it's easy to kind of push the board out from under you.

Those are some of the more common problems with this trick. Really, this one is likely going to take you a little while to get down and good looking... And some people have harder times with heelflip variations than others might, but this one really isn't that bad once you get the hang of it, I promise. Keep messing with it and you'll have it down in time for sure.

Where Do I Go From Here?

To a game of SKATE! Not enough people mess with these and get them down solid. Get these consistent and you'll have an advantage over most everybody you play. Or maybe you just wanna like, try some backside or frontside doubles or say... A varial doubleheel? Good luck with whatever you decide.

Try to jump a little higher and hold your feet up a little longer. Landing primo fucking sucks no doubt.. And hurts like hell.. But if you're getting that far, you're getting really close to landing it.

On that note.. I remember my friend doing a heel over a handrail, landing primo.. Just watching that hurt.
