Bigflip

Introduction

Alright, bigflips... It's when you do a 360 flip, and a backside body varial together. You know what a bigspin is right? Well, a bigflip is a bigspin with a kickflip... Haha, maybe now you can see why it's called what it is (if you didn't prior).

What You Need to Know

Tricks You Should Know:

Backside bigspins are pretty important here. If you can't do these, you'll likely have a harder time figuring this trick out than you should, so have those down before messing with bigflips. And 360 flips aren't a bad idea, either.. But some people actually will find these EASIER than regular 360 flips.

What You May Find Useful:

It's a lot easier to do this trick in the fakie stance, you know. You might want to figure out this trick in fakie first, and then work on it regular. That's what I personally did, and it seemed to really make it easier to make this trick happen in regular stance.

Doing The Trick

Positioning:
  • The back foot
You will want to place the back foot like you would if you were going to be doing just a regular 360 flip.

  • The front foot
The front foot also is going to look a lot like it would for a 3 flip. I'd say put it about two inches behind the front bolts.
Motion:

What's a bigflip if you're not riding? Haha, nothing cool, I'd say. Take a few pushes and get a little bit of speed, and position your feet as detailed above. Alright, now let's do a bigflip.

  1. Alright, remember this is a lot like a regular bigspin. So, you remember how you sort of slightly wind your body up before you start the tail motion on those? Right, well, you're going to do the same thing here

  2. After you've got your bit of a 'wind up' set, unwind your upper body, and begin spinning the board as your upper body is lined up with it. When you do this, you're going to be sort of making both a scooping and popping motion. This is really going to feel like it would on a bigspin.

  3. While you're starting the rotation with your back foot, you need to drag your front foot up the board towards the nose. Bring it up and make a clean flicking motion in that little dip just before the nose, making your board begin the kickflip motion.

  4. Alright, once the trick is started, get your feet out of the way by pulling them up. Your body should naturally be spinning at this point, since you did that little wind up bit before you popped the tail.

  5. The board is going to be spinning faster than you, obviously. Ideally, as you finish up the backside 180 body varial, the 360 flip motion should be about finished also. Make sure you watch it, and make sure you're staying over it.

  6. Once your body and board are straightened out, put your feet back down and catch the board.

  7. Land on the ground as evenly as you can, and absorb impact. And hey, remember you're landing in switch now, so make sure you put that bit of extra focus into staying balanced and such, and ride away clean.

Troubleshooting

If you find yourself running into any problems with this trick, check out below.

  • My board isn't spinning the full 360 degrees.
If this is a problem, you need to put a bit more effort into the scooping of the tail. Make sure you give it enough force to help it finish the rotation up. Also, consider giving your body a bit more of a "wind up" before beginning the trick. Honestly, that upper body motion is really going to help the board make the 360 spin, so it needs to be solid.

If you're getting really close, but you find the board is just coming up a little bit short, don't worry too much. If you can, try to catch it a bit earlier and guide it around the rest of the rotation. This can be done easiest with a powerslide/pivot.

  • My board doesn't do a full kickflip
It can feel like a lot is going on in this trick, but you have to really pay attention to your front foot. Make a clean flip right in that perfect spot right before the nose. It doesn't have to be terribly powerful, either. If it's not flipping all the way on you, just flick it a little bit harder.

  • My board comes out from under me
If this is happening... First off, make sure you're getting a clean flick with the front foot. Make sure that you're simply not just kicking it away. Also, focus on making a clean pop/scoop motion with the tail. A sloppy pop can send this one away from you easy.

And as you're probably already aware, sometimes it can seem like a board will naturally move out in front of you a little bit. If that's a problem here, don't be scared to actually try to jump with your board. You gotta stay over this one, so do it however you got to.

  • The board gets caught up in my legs before it finished the 360 flip
You gotta pull your legs up. Make sure they're completely out of the way of the board, and make sure you give it enough time to finish up before trying to catch it.

  • I land, but as soon as I do my board shoots out and I fall
A pretty common problem with backside bigspins.. So naturally, this can be a problem with bigflips. If you have this problem, correct it just as you would a bigspin. Focus on staying over your board the entire time, and make sure you're not leaning too far in any direction.

This can be a bit weird to figure out at first.. But play with it a while and you'll come to find it's not really that bad. Good luck.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Down the nearest gap, I'd suppose.. Or maybe you want to see if you can throw another flip in there.. Or wait.. Maybe a 360 body varial.. But fuck, wait, that's a backside 360 kickflip! Good luck with whatever you choose to do.
