IntroductionThis is a pretty basic trick, but is often overlooked by many skaters. This trick can be a great tool to throw out in a game of skate for a quick letter. It's also something that can get people turning heads if you take it down a gap. Take the time to mess with this one.
Oh, and incase you're confused here.. This trick is a backside pop shove it of the board and your body does a frontside 180 body varial. What You Need to KnowThis trick is basically the same as a backside pop shove it, only with a little body work. Before you get to work on this it would only make sense to have the ability to do a backside pop shove it. Other Skills: Upper body control will never hurt you in skateboarding. This trick will utilize this a little bit more than some of the other basic skateboarding tricks, so you might find this to be a plus. If you don't have it, however, don't fear. This can be a great tool to get you on the road to developing said skill. Doing The TrickPositioning: The positioning of your feet on this one will be the exact same as it would for a backside pop shove it. However, if you think it will help, feel free to put a little bit more of your back foot on the tail. Other than that small tweak however, nothing else should be changed. Motion: Give yourself a few pushes and get yourself going at a comfortable speed. And remember, you're going to be doing a body varial here, so this means you're going to be landing switch. Take this in consideration when considering how much speed you want.
Alright now. So you're riding, and you've got your feet set up properly. Everything looks good so far. Now, pop your tail and use your back foot to begin the pop shove it.
As you're popping the tail, everything should be going as if you were doing just a regular pop shove it. However, once your feet leaves the deck, begin turning your body it the frontside direction (the opposite of the board).
You may be wondering how to begin the motion of the body varial. This also comes from the back foot after it has sent the deck in motion. However, this should almost happen naturally and shouldn't require much effort or thought.
Try to have the pop shove it and your body varial going at the same speed. This not only helps the trick look nice, but it also helps you in landing the trick. If you do this correctly, you should find the board has finished rotating underneath you and you're ready to land it switch.
Spot your feet on the bolts and land this one as best you can. At this point you'll likely want to concentrate most on maintaining control in switch stance. If you're uncomfortable, go ahead and let yourself perform a fakie pivot to get back to regular stance. TroubleshootingSpin the board and spin your body... Sounds pretty simple, doesn't it? And really, it somewhat is. However, you might snag a few problems with this one. If you are, check out below.
-The board is not staying under me
If you can't keep the board leveled under you then you might want to consider going back and working on regular backside pop shoves a little bit. There is no sense in making this trick harder than it needs to be due to lack of decent pop shoves. Get that cleaned up and then come back to this one.
-It seems my body gets tangled up and I have a hard time landing and/or maintaining balance
This can be the result of trying to turn your body the wrong way. You really have to get the motion started on your back foot. If you wait until your feet have left the ground and then you try to force your body to rotate in mid-air you're going to have an incredibly hard time. Focus on getting that motion from your back foot.
Also, make sure you keep your upper body and lower body together. Letting your upper body spin too much and trying to land can cause some nasty falls. Keep everything together.
-I'm landing fine on bolts and just losing it
This can be caused by so many things. But it's most likely you're having a hard time because you're landing switch. If this problem occurs too often, consider spending some time just rolling around switch and getting a better feel for it.
You could also consider trying this one a few times fakie. But that's another trick tip.
It's unlikely you'll encounter problems other than these basic few. If however you do, feel free to post with an explanation and I'll offer any help I can. Remember, it's essentially the same as a backside pop shove it. Don't over-think it and and keep it simple. Where Do I Go From Here?Where do you feel like going from here? You could try spinning a 360 shove it. Maybe try a 360 body varial? Or hell, you might want to get these clean enough to take them down some nice size gaps. Do this down a nice stair set and see how many people ask you thinks like "What the hell was that, man?".. Have fun.
