Frontside Noseslide

By Iskatehard at 2009-10-03 21:41

Introduction

The frontside noseslide is one of those tricks that seem like every skater should learn at some point or another. It's a fun trick, and can be applied to a ton of different objects... So, learn this trick! But eh, it can be a bit confusing, so check this out if you need help.

What You Need to Know

Tricks You Should Know:

Before you can expect to be able to get into this slide, you need to know how to do a frontside 180. Also, you will want to know how to do frontside boardslides also, as this will help familiarize you with doing frontside slides/slides in general.

Other Skills:

Some people find backside noseslides easier than this trick.. If you are completely new to the noseslide business, take the time to try both of these out and see which one you personally find easier.. Learning one will certainly make the second much easier!

What You May Find Useful:

This trick can be a lot less intimidating, and even easier to learn, on a box/curb rather than on a rail. If possible, I'd suggest you try these out on that obstacle.

Doing The Trick

Positioning:
  • The back foot
Set your back foot up similarly to how you would for a backside 180. Put it in a position that will give you the ability to properly control your board as well as to pop an ollie high enough to get onto the object you're going to slide.

  • The front foot
The front foot is best placed similarly to the spot you would put it for a backside 180. Make sure you have it just a few inches behind the front bolts at most. You really want it sort of high up on the board to help you get into this slide.
Motion:

You should already know all this, but I'll go ahead and throw it out there.. Before attempting to learn this trick, you need to know the object you want to slide. Know how much height you will need in your ollie to get onto it. Know how slick it is to get a good idea on how much speed you want to approach it with. And also, know how much distance you will want between you and your object when you pop your tail to start the trick.

  1. Alright, so you are set to get this started. First thing you will need to do is set up your feet like detailed above, and ride towards the object you are going to slide with an appropriate amount of speed.

  2. When you're in the right spot from the object, pop your tail and begin your ollie. In order to get your nose over the tail, you're going to need to do a slight backside 180 motion.

  3. As you're turning your backside 180 motion, you should have a good sight of the object you're going to slide. Spot where you're going to land, and use your front foot to guide the nose of your deck over the object.

  4. Land on the object while putting most of your weight over the nose and the object. You will need to put enough weight into it make sure that you're able to get 'locked in' to the slide, but you have to make sure not to put TOO much, as this can cause you to just stick rather than slide. I personally suggest trying to have about 70% of your weight over the nose, and 30% over the rest of the board.

  5. As soon as you're into the slide, you have to set up to slide it out. Some of this trick is very similar to the frontside boardslide. You will need to bend your knees a bit, and lean back (the direction you're sliding) a little bit to keep your body over the board and to make the slide happen.

  6. Focus on maintain control of your body and the board and slide this trick out to the point where you're ready to get out of the slide.

  7. When you're ready to make your exit, you will need to use your feet to guide the board straight and off of the object. While you do this, you will place a little more weight on the nose of your board since this is the foundation of your rotation. Also, as you guide the board off of the object, make sure you keep your upper body over the deck the entire time.

  8. Continue to straighten your board out after you leave the object, and land as straight as possible. It's alright if you don't completely straighten out at first, and this part can take some practice to polish up.. Right now, just focus on getting straight enough to be able to ride away.

  9. Land with your board evenly on the ground and absorb impact as you see fit. Make sure you keep your upper body directly over the board to make for a clean ride away.. And like usual, have both feet over the bolts as much as possible.

  10. Continue riding away, and go brag to all your friends about having just landed this trick!

Troubleshooting

This trick can cause problems to people who try to learn it, obviously. Check out below to find solutions to some common problems with this trick, and hopefully it'll have you landing this one soon.

  • I can't get my nose over the object properly to lock into a slide
It's pretty hard to slide it out if you can't get into it, isn't it? You gotta get locked into this slide to make it happen. If you're having an issue with this.. You might want to reconsider the distance you're putting between you and your object when you pop your tail. Too much or too little room will stop this trick from going down.

Also, you have to know that this isn't just ollie over the object and hope to land in the slide. You have to guide your nose over the object and make sure you really force it on there. Luckily, with this being a frontside slide, you really get a good look at it all.. So watch yourself, and make sure that you're putting the nose exactly where you want it.

  • I land on the object correctly, but don't slide.
This is most often because of one of two things.. One being because the object isn't slick enough.. And you will need to apply some (more) wax or go a little bit faster. OR.. This could be because you're applying too much weight over the nose. You have to make an effort to only put so much over the nose of your board when you get into this. Too much weight will stop the slide instantly.

  • I begin the slide, but the board shoots out from under me!
Remember learning frontside boardslides, and having the board come out from under you? Well, if this is happening to you, it's due to the same reason it happened on fs boards. You gotta bend your knees and lean with the slide to stay over your board. It's weird at first, because you're sliding backwards.. So you gotta take that extra effort and make yourself commit to it.

This trick takes some messing with before you really understand it.. And it takes a deal of commitment too. Keep trying it and keep giving it your all, and you'll find yourself riding away from it soon enough.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Where you want, of course. Maybe you want to polish it up and make it look cleaner. Maybe you want to do it on a more difficult obstacle.. Or, maybe you're curious to see if you can do a flip trick into it. Whatever you think would be good, best of luck with it!
