Backside Noseslide

By Iskatehard at 2009-07-21 23:57

Introduction

The backside noseslide.. Without a doubt one of the slide tricks you're going to want under your belt. And remember, this is nose"slide", not grind. You're going to be sliding on the nose of your board, not grinding on the front truck, in case you didn't already know. Anyway, let's get this trick tip started.

What You Need to Know

Tricks You Should Know:

You don't do a full frontside 180, obviously.. But you sort of do part of the motion in order to get your nose over the object you are going to slide on. Knowing this, it'll be a good idea to have a good fs 180 on lock.

Other Skills:

You might want to know a few other slides before trying this one. While this trick is somewhat a basic one, it's not really one of the first you'll learn, y'know? Familiarize yourself with sliding as much as you can, as it'll always make learning new tricks like this easier. If you are new to slides, I'd suggest you consider trying to learn boardslides first.

What You May Find Useful:

If possible, it's a lot easier to figure this trick out on a box/curb than a rail. So, try finding one of those to practice on.

Doing The Trick

Positioning:
  • The back foot
Set your back foot up like you would if you were going to do a frontside 180. Make sure it's pretty squared on the tail.

  • The front foot
The front foot is best placed similarly to the spot you would put it for a frontside 180. Make sure you have it just a few inches behind the front bolts at most. You really want it sort of high up on the board to help you get into this slide.
Motion:

Before trying this, get to know what you are going to try to slide. Make sure you know how slick it is and how much speed you will need to make it across it. Also, judge how much distance away from the object you will want to create from yourself. I'd suggest putting about a board's length roughly between you and the object you want to hit. Once you figure that all out, we can get the motion started:

  1. Ride towards the object and set up your feet and create the proper amount of distance you will need to get onto the object you want to slide. When you're first learning this, you might want to approach the object with a slight angle rather than riding parallel.

  2. Pop your tail and begin your ollie. Rotate slightly, just enough to get your nose over the object. You will have to guide the nose of your board over the object you want to slide using your front foot. Try to get as much of your nose onto the object as possible.

  3. Land on the object with your nose on it. You want to keep about 70% of your weight over the nose, and 30% over the board. You have to make sure you aren't placing too much weight onto the nose, as it'll kill your slide

  4. As you begin to slide, focus on keeping yourself over your board. To best do this, make sure you keep your shoulders lined up with the board. And also, know that this slide doesn't just happen on it's own. You sort of want to slightly push the nose forward along the object with your front foot. As you're doing this, you will need to lean forward slightly to stay over it.

  5. As you decide you are going to leave the object you're sliding on, begin to push the nose of your board to begin rotating yourself back to normal position. As you're about to leave the object completely, you'll want to give the nose a slight nudge to help you finish off your rotation before you land on the ground

  6. Stay over your board as it rotates back around and land as straight on the ground as you can. Bend your knees as you need, and ride away clean. Nice job

Troubleshooting

This is a real weird trick at first.. If you have problems, check below.

  • I have a hard time getting my nose over the object and locking into my slide
This is perhaps the hardest part of the trick. You really have to just practice at ollieing and landing on your nose.

One tip I'd suggest is riding straight towards the object you want to try to slide. Roll slow and pop and ollie when you get close to it, and push your nose down when you get to it, landing yourself in a nosestall.

When you get good at that, stop going straight at the object, and start approaching it with more and more of an angle. Just go slow, pop your ollie, and land in a nosestall. As you build up more and more of an angle, you'll become much better at guiding your nose over the object and getting "locked in".

  • I land on my nose, but I just don't slide
This can be a problem no doubt. First, make sure you're approaching the object with a proper amount of speed. If you go terribly slow, this trick just wont slide well. You really do have to use a bit of speed on this one.

Also, make sure that you're not putting all your weight over your nose. You really have to try to apply just enough to stay locked in and stay over your board. The less weight you can put on the nose, the less friction you're going to have under you. The less friction, the easier the slide.

And as a final tip.. Remember, this slide doesn't just happen on it's own. You really don't get on and just "ride it out" like you might with other tricks. On this one, you have to put a good deal of effort into leaning forward and pushing the nose across the object with your front foot.

  • I can't straighten out enough at the end of the slide to ride away
You have to really guide this one around to get it straightened out. If you're just not getting enough of a rotation at the end of get straight enough to ride away, you need to make sure you're giving your nose that little "nudge" right before it leaves the object. If you aren't, start. If you are and it's still not happening, give that nudge a little more force.

  • I get on the object, but it shoots out
You know, you need a little more speed than usual to make this slide happen. So, knowing you're going to be going faster than usual, you know you're going to have to make more effort into staying over your board. Remember, bend your knees and lean forward.

And on that note, don't lean too far forward. Similarly to boardslides, if you lean too far forward, it will mess up the slide and you'll stop.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Higher and faster slides, perhaps? Or fuck, see if you can kickflip into it? Do it switch?
