Varial Heelflips

By windust. at 2009-04-01 19:33

Introduction

Varial Heelflips are a combination of a heelflip and fronside pop shove it. They're a lot easier to learn if you've been doing those two tricks for a while or if you're better at them than kickflips and backside pop shove its.

What You Need to Know

Frontside Pop Shove Its and Heeflips. This trick is a combination of those two, so it only makes sense that you should know those two before trying varial heelflips. It is possible that it is easier to get the rotation for these rather than regular heelfips, but you would only be making it harder for yourself if you try these first, since it would probably make it easier for you to learn these and get more control over them.

Other Skills:

You can just try to flick the board and try to get the rotation and not try and land it, but you definitely shouldn't get you to it since it's a big problem for some people to land on the board in the first place.

What You May Find Useful:

Like I said above, flicking the board but not trying to land it right away can help you, but don't over do it.

Doing The Trick

varial heelflip stance
Positioning:
  1. Put your back foot like you would for a frontside pop shove it. I personally like to put my foot about halfway up the nose. But in the picture I have my foot also at a slight angle, which I normally do not do but I've seen many people set their feet up that way. Try both out to find out which one works for you.

  2. Put your front foot like you would for a heelflip or a little more to the left if you're goofy and right if you're regular. It'll probably make it easier for you to get the full rotation, but also makes you have less control over the trick, so that's your decision. I like to have my toes hanging off about an inch away from the front bolts and at a very slight angle.
Motion:
  1. 1. Bend down and stay centered over the board, this is very important to help you do the trick properly.

  2. 2. Pop and smoothly shove your back foot forward while simultaneously start dragging your front foot forward, this will start the frontside rotation, and you will be nearing the flip.

  3. 3. Flick a little before the nose with your front foot to start the flip while the board rotates the frontside pop shove it.

  4. <4. Watch the board flip while putting your feet back in position to land the trick, you don't want to land off balance and slip out.

  5. 5. Once your feet are back over the board and the board has flipped all the way, catch it on the bolts to maintain balance if possible.

  6. 6. Stay balanced and take the impact since you can pretty easily slip out if your only starting to land these, make sure you're not going to fall and roll away.

Troubleshooting

  1. P: I cannot get the full rotation.
S: As I said before if you put your front foot farther away from the front bolts it will help the board flip faster. Jumping higer and sucking up your legs more is another solution if your stopping the rotation by catching it halfway.

  2. P: Skateboard landing in back of you.
S: This is easily one of the biggest problems people have with this trick. Make sure you're centered over the board when you pop and if that doesn't wrong, lean back before you pop or jump backwards after you do. Try and avoid those two if possible because it will make doing the trick more uncomfortable and make it hard to do off and onto things.

  3. P: Over-rotation
S: Exact opposite of under-rotation. Put your front foot closer to the front bolts so the board doesn't quite as fast, this should also help you get more control which can also help you with over-rotation.

  4. P: Spinning with the board.
S: For this there isn't really much of a solution besides trying to keep centered, you just have to keep practing and trying to keep from rotating with your skateboard.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Frontside Heelflips are a good trick to learn after these, I'd personally say they are harder than varial heelflips.

sounds like youre either not committing or you just need to keep practicing, as easy as it sounds just really focus on getting your back foot off the ground
