So, we all should be well aware that, no matter how long you've been skating, mini-ramps are fun as hell. They support pretty much any style of skating, from street-style flips to vert style airs, it can be done a nice mini. One problem, though. What if their aren't any public minis? Who really wants to pay $15 a day to skate an indoor park? No one. That is why I am providing you with a nice plan for a mini that will keep you entertained day after day.
The ramp you are making should be approximately 4 feet high by 8 feet wide. A perfect size.
Supplies:
3 4X8 feet pieces of 3/4 inch ply wood
8 4X8 1/4 inch sheets of plywood
48 4 foot pieces of 2X4s
Screws
Optional:
Thin steel piping
Paint/waterproofer
Now, the first thing you'll want to do is mark an arch from the the top tip to bottom tip on both sides of all sheets of 3/4 inch plywood. If done right, you should have a surfboard-like shape sketched on the wood. Cut all pieces, leaving 6 miniramp shaped frames. Remember to never make a 90 degree arch. Make it nice and mellow. Next, screw 12 2X4s into 4 of the pieces of 3/4 inch plywood. Remember to have the 2 inch side of the 2X4s pointing up. I cannot stress this enough. Next, screw two frames with 2X4s into one 2X4 less frame inbetween, leaving an 8 foot wide 2x4 frame with a 2X4 piece in the middle. Repeat. Once this is done, screw 2 sheets of quarter inch ply wood over each set of 2X4s. Four screws into each stud should work great. This should complete your miniramp completely, and, if done correctly is ready to skate.
Optional:
Waterproofing:
If keeping outside, it is absolutely necessary to paint or waterproof it. This part should be easy to figure out. Just buy the paint or waterproofer, put on two coats, let dry and skate.
Coping:
What you'll need is:
Two 8 foot thin half-inch steel pipes
Six copper brackets.
Place the pipes across the tops of both sides of the ramp. Place a bracket over the pipe at each frame-piece, screw in, wax and skate.
And there you have it, a perfect mini-ramp for anything from the rainy day garage sesh to the middle of summer backyard skate-jam. If you followed the directions, you shouldn't have to worry about cracks or holes for a long long time. This whole ramp should run anywhere from 300-500$ for all new materials. Go through garages, ask people for scraps, steal from lumberyards, whatever. Enjoy!
