No one is full of ***** otherwise they'd be dead.

Now, with that settled, to clean your bearings you
a. Pop off the shields
b. Put the bearings in a solvent such as
1. Paint thinner/mineral spirits
2. Denatured alcohol
3. Gasoline
4. Kerosene
5. Carburetor cleaner
c. Take them out a little bit later after the dirt has been mostly removed.
d. If you have one, take a can of compressed air and spray the bearings. If not, leave them dry on a napkin for a few minutes.
e. Relubricate them using the lubricant of your choice (I use synthetic oil/skate lubricant).
f. Put the shields back on.
