I wrote an essay about this exact thing for my English class.
A lot of it sounds gay and is bullshit, but whatever. Alex Beckley Running Nowhere at Full Speed Anybody that has ever said “life is not easy” definitely was not a liar. It gets especially difficult during the transition from high school and the teenage years to being in the ‘real world.’ It is especially difficult to become self sufficient without any help from your parents, who have been there all your life to correct your mistakes and help you through any financial hardships you have faced. Beginning college, getting and actually maintaining a job, buying a car, and trying to save money to be able to move out is no easy task. The whole two years I was in high school, I never once thought that I would miss it once I was gone. I also thought that whoever said that it is supposed to be the best years of your life had to be insane. I was fortunate enough to be able to graduate high school two years early, right after my sophomore year. I now know just how much I took it for granted. I was able to borrow textbooks from the library, rather than spending close to a hundred dollars for one. It was also tremendously helpful that I did not have to pay for my classes in high school. Looking back at high school now, I realize how easy I had it when all of my current worries were taken care of. The sudden reality of financial responsibility is probably the hardest thing that you have to face during this transition. I look back on when I was a little kid, how if I wanted something, all I had to do is use puppy eyes and ask my parents nicely and they would happily oblige. Now, all of the sudden, if I want or need something, I must make sure that my bills and school are paid for before I can get what it is that I want. Even just buying a ten dollar CD has become difficult at times. Being a teenager has many undesirable traits. Most employers just refuse to hire a teenager that has no work experience. There is a catch-22 that is extremely prevalent in this situation. How am I supposed to get work experience if nobody will hire me because of my age? It felt like it was nearly impossible to find an employer that was willing to hire a teenager with no relevant work experience. After countless job applications, I finally found a job at Old Navy. I later found out that they actually look for teenagers that have no work experience, just so that they have worthwhile work experience. Not only is it difficult to locate a job, it can also be fairly difficult to maintain one at times. It was a bit of a challenge to fit school into my sporadic work schedule. One day, I may stay at work until 10pm, and then end up going right back at 6am the following day. I went from getting the recommended eight hours of sleep per night to getting virtually none, in what seemed like no time at all. Sleep is something that is very easy to forget about when you have the responsibility of making it work on time every day and attempting to maintain decent grades in school. I found that locating a decent vehicle was incredibly difficult as well. For the longest time, I was driving my parents’ car and paying their insurance that was unnecessarily high for anybody my age. I had to do so until I could find a car that I did not fear would stop running one day while I’m on the freeway or about to leave for work. Being that I am still a teenager, basically any insurance company is going to charge a lot more than what seems necessary, just for me to be able to legally drive. On top of the car payment that I had recently began paying; I now had to deal with insurance as well. When I was a little kid, I never really understood how much my parents actually had to do to keep a roof over my head. It was incredibly naïve to think that they had an unlimited amount of money stashed somewhere, and were able to spend it as they pleased. It did sometimes seem that their money was endless, but I have slowly learned that they are just good at maintaining their income. Now when I decide to purchase a video game or a skateboard, I actually have to wait until after I get paid and my finances are temporarily settled. Nobody ever seemed to mention that I would have difficulty holding a steady relationship after high school either. Between a horrible work schedule, school, and homework, it can be difficult to prioritize my responsibilities in a way that will benefit my girlfriend and I in the long run, while freeing up some time to spend with her. Most married adults are able to make life seem so simple and I am still ignorant as to how they manage doing so. I do not recall a time hearing my parents talking about a financial problem that they were not able to quickly resolve. I do not know whether to believe that they are actually that good at prioritizing their finances, or that we are in horrible debt and they just refuse to tell me. Sometimes it seems as though it would be so much easier to just give up on life, go purchase a handful of lottery tickets, and hope for the best. Financial independence and responsibility has not been a very fun thing to get used to over the past year or so. I never thought that there would be a time in my life that I would actually want to go back to the miserable times in high school. Although things have gotten difficult at times, I’m actually grateful to have started being financially independent at such a young age. If any of my friends in high school were to ask me for advice on what lies ahead of them, I would definitely tell them to stay put where they are and live it up while they can because it seems like it only gets worse from there on out. |

I know the feeling and it sucks. You should start putting back a little bit every week for things like that. When I moved out of my parents house a few years ago I had to learn to do that.

Hannibal Lecture.

As of Monday, I've stopped at a road block, and it seems as though i'm not allowed to help finish the road.
See, last Monday, i lost my job. I have no proper education either, and the recession is still hauling ass, so jobs are hard to come by. I have no idea what i'm supposed to do right now, i can't go to school, because i don't have a steady income to support my scholarship, i can apply for shitty jobs, but even the most shittiest of jobs require a paper which i do not own. As of now, i'm completely stuck, and my own goddamn fault. If i'd pushed myself a little harder, and finished school, i'd have less trouble finding a job, i really regret dropping out. It might seem awesome at first, doing whatever you want, not having to do any homework, but this shit has come back to bite me in the ass. Not only do i lack a steady income, come next month, if i don't find a new job, i'll have no money either. This puts quite a bit of pressure on my being, as i do not know what to do. Most say ''apply for any job,'' and i am, but even ''any job'' has high standards now it seems. Then again, i'm deeply disappointed by this system, because i'm sure i can handle most jobs i see, i just don't have the proper diploma for it. I believe they should not only look at your diploma's, they should also give you the chance to try it out for one day, see if you like it/if it's possible for you to do, regardless of education and experience. Doing this would help a lot in terms of helping those without jobs, and it might just benefit the job market as a whole too. However, this is not the case, so i'm stuck. I can honestly say dropping out was the most stupid thing i have ever done. |
