    Default Emulators and Roms

Okay so lately I've seen alot of people asking how to download old video games onto your computer. I thought I'd amke a thread on to make everything clear.

Step 1 - Download an emulator for the concole you want. A good adn safe place for emulators is http://www.emulator-zone.com/ From here you can download NES, SNES, Sega Saturn, Gameboy etc. Click on ths console and look at the different emulators, each one has a ranking and tells you the specs. I suggest before you download it you make a folder for your emulator and roms. So then download the emulator you want.
Step 2 - Activating the emulator. Then go to the file you have the emulator in, right click on it and click "extract files". Then click ok on the window that comes up. Now theres a new folder with the emulator name. In there is the emulator.
Step 3 - Downloading Roms. A good site for Roms is www.romnation.net Now click on the console that you downloaded and find the game you want. Download it onto your computer. (I suggest into the folder you made for your emulator) Some games on that site will be hack of games, like I have a Super Mario Brothers for Nes but instead of Mario, it's Link. Another I have Carnage and Alice Cooper.
Step 4 - Playing the Rom on your emulator. So go into your emulator file and click on your emulator. The icon usually looks like the video game system or a controller. When the screen comes up click on "options" so you can set your contols. (sometimes it says "Input" instead of options.) From here set your controls to your keyboard or gamepad. I suggest you should get a gamepad for emulators like Snes because of all the buttons. After setting your controls click "open" and find the folder you have the rom(s) in. Click on the Rom and your set to go.

    Problems
-Sometimes the Rom file doesn't work and you'll have to find a different file.
-Sometimes an emulator won't play a Rom. This happened to me, I couldn't figure out why my one game wouldn't work. I had to download a different emulator.
-Sound, some emulators don't have sound. Simple as that.

EDIT: Another thing I see people ask about are emulators for newer systems. For PS2, Gamecube, Xbox, etc won't work. I know some Playstaion and N64 ones work.

I hope this clears up any questions. PM me if you need any other help.

Romnation has helped so thanks for that, and coolrom is actually where I was having the most problem with ESA protected games. I didn't think of limewire for roms either, thanks.

Limewire works, but it's hard to use. I think you have extract that file to, I got Mario RPG of there.

I hope a mod stickies this, because this clears up all the wuestiosn I've heard people ask.

    http://www.skateboard-city.com/messa...light=Emulator

This thread's been done. The search button is there for a reason. We don't need the same topic coming up every few months as a new thread.

Back in '06 StarCraftLedZeppilin made an exceptional emulator thread, it lsited several sites to get both emulators and roms, It answered alot of questions for them and was made a full year before this thread. Nice try buddy, but StarCraftLedZeppilin beat you to it.

Anyways. Emulator's are also good for ripping sprites, if your into graphical design or sprite making, as i am. Winkawaks, one of the best emulators for ripping sprites(especially capcom such as the Marvel Vs Capcom series or the street Fighter series), Is the current emulator i use for Arcade, which includes NeoGeo Roms, CPS1 & CPS2.

Eh while i'm hear i'll try to answer you "problems":

    Problems
-Sometimes the Rom file doesn't work and you'll have to find a different file.
This means that the Rom file is damaged, upload wrong, or possibly even a virus. After downloading one that doesn't work, i suggest deleting all of that rom's contents and running a virus check. Especially if it is from a site like Sendspace, or megaupload.

-Sometimes an emulator won't play a Rom. This happened to me, I couldn't figure out why my one game wouldn't work. I had to download a different emulator.
This usually happens because a rom for a certain game is made after a current version, or before, of the emulator is made, and the emulator can't handle the old file, or new one. Another reason could be that the destination drive is full or the rom file is missing some codecs or too big.

-Sound, some emulators don't have sound. Simple as that.
Usually sound can be turned on or off by editing the emulators CGF file in notepad. Usually going about so is in the FAQ file, but it is usally just changing a 0 to a 1. All emulators should come with sound.

Well, he really didn't say what to do or how to install them. And who cares, I made it now because recently I've seen alot of people asking about them so I thought I'd make a tutorial on it. And all emulators don't have sound. I have a Nes emulator with no sound.

I used CoolRoms before. I hate them.

I really can't remember any specific ROM sites which were all reliable and good. I know of a few, (PE2000.net, OneMinuteLeft.com) but thoe sites are mostly down.

Just search around. Good ROM sites usually a fuckton of ROMs under a single letter.
