I'm not sure if anyone looks in here, but I was wondering, is the downtown Eastside really that bad? I've heard of it being the poorest place in Canada or something, among other shock stories. So, I was wondering if it is indeed shocking.

I've noticed rent's really cheap in the Hastings area compared to the rest of Vancouver, generally. I plan to live there one day, or at least do some sort of exchange there.

Hastings and Main would be a place to avoid unless you're into homeless people and heroin. Where abouts on Hastings is the rent cheap? There are some really shitty areas along there but it's also got it's okay parts. But still you might want to consider something in a suburb like burnaby or somewhere by there. Then you still would be really close to downtown, and living in a nicer area for possibly similar rent prices.

Oh and yeah specifically downtown eastside isn't the nicest area.

haha fark. They're all on East Hastings or Main St. And a couple in Hastings-Sunrise
There are a couple of cheapish places in the Granville area though. I will look into Burnaby

yeah I looked into Burnaby. There looks to be some nice ass places for pretty cheap, like near the border of Van and Burnaby. Specifically, Capitol Hill area. The high Aussie dollar and our relatively high income/comparatively low cost of living in Canada and the USA makes North America a really viable option for Australians right now.

the granville area isn't bad at all, but yeah i'd definitely avoid the ones along hastings

and burnaby would be a great area especially if your close to the metro, then downtown is really close

but being an aussie have you considered going into the program that they have up at whistler where you work up there and live there for a while? forgot what the whole program was but you probably know what im talking about

When I was in Whistler there were tons of Aussies doing that, working in the restaurants and such.

yeah man then you have a pretty good job up there living in like one of the best parts of bc in my opinion anyways, and when you're off work you get to hit up the slopes all day, then at night go to the clubs and party ahaha you'd be doing pretty good up there, and your still only an hour and a half or so from vancouver itself, fuck man i wanna do that now

Maybe one day man. But with the Whistler thing, we're just talking about this snow season thing where you work and ski/board. A lot of Australians go over every year to do it.

I'm sure Whitetrash is the man to go to about this, but Sydney's expensive, and expansive as fuck. I read somewhere it's like 3 times the size (land area) of NYC, thanks to urban sprawl. The beaches of Bondi all the way out to Penrith, which is pretty inland is still considered Sydney.

If I was moving to somewhere in Aus, I'd choose Melbourne.
