Yeah that's my impression too. Seems to come in waves. Since people stopped giving a shit about Tony Hawk games it seems to have died off in the general mainstream society.

Felt a lot more popping back in the 2000s

I still watch Street League and stuff on ESPN but it's become so robotic that I don't really give a shit... kinda like snowboarding big air. Everyone attempts the one trick and all runs end up looking the same.

Either that or I'm just getting older and out of touch.

I went to the skate park not too long ago and I honestly think iPads and smartphones have killed skateboarding. I went on early Sunday afternoon and it was DEAD, I was the only one there. Back in the day it would be filled and you'd have to wait your turn and risk getting hit by scooter kids

Street League feels kinda like vert skating in the 80s, it's over commercialised but it's existing in a time when public interest is waning

Might go watch the Gator Rogowski doc tonight

literally 5 6 years ago when I was first skating there was at least 100 skaters in Zagreb that i knew and saw regularly at spots, now there's maybe 5 that still skate consistently. there was also 3 skate shops back then and now there is only one which isn't really a skate shop, it's more of an extreme sport shop but it also has skating gear. It really sucks, I remember go skating days 5 years back were crowded, the whole city was filled with skaters, now there's almost no one. Can't remember the last time I saw a new skater, I always just bump into someone I already know.

I dunno, skateboarding's popularity seems to come in waves, as mentioned above. Here in Greece it seems to be rising slightly, not sure as I live in this piece of shit island, far away from any sort of skateboarding scene, unfortunately.

After I finish school and college (so in 4-5 years from now), I'm seriously thinking of moving to NYC, which is my dream. I wanna save up some cash so I can afford rent till I can find a job, as rent is incredibly high there, from what I've heard. (1k+ per month).
Anyone here lives in NYC? If so, can you give me some insight on how this shit works there?

Are there any parks in Greece? I'm just imagining some rag tag skateboarders skating the Philippeion ledges or something lol

Also try more like 2k per month for renting a 1 bedroom apartment in somewhere not a total shithole out in like Queens. You could probably get by with a room for 1k tho.

I look at rents in big cities around the world occasionally out of sheer curiosity

There are a few parks in Greece, but most are shit. Living in this shit island is a huge disadvantage, cuz going anywhere is a huge chore. Not to mention the shitty bus schedules.
I got a friend that lives in Chelsea and pays 2k/mth. If I move to NYC I'll most likely be moving with a friend.
I just wanna finish school and college and gtfo to the US.
I can't see myself living in this shitty country for more than that.

I"m originally from the NYC area, and I think -- fuck that! (If you're serious about skateboarding and getting into magazines, it does help to social climb... but really... screw that!) My very unreliable advice would be to stay on that shitty island in Greece *OR* to go to some other shitty place and make your skateboarding great.

whenever i go to a park (a major rarity in the last 5 years or so) its still pretty busy

i was in venice the other day at a tattoo shop where the artist was your typical 40 year old dog town esque kinda guy and he was just bitching about how mainstream skateboarding has become while also saying that a lot of spots and famous parks (some I frequented as a kid and didn't know were gone now) have been destroyed to make room for the usual posh yuppie shit and the rebranding of cities

socal is definitely a weird place to me now in general; only parts of hollywood seem the same. fairfax is a fucking joke now though

im starting to skate a little more again because why not - but in the end i expect it's just becoming more normal and not pumped my angst and rebellion. probably been that way for a long time already, idunno. it's certainly become a focal point of the #hypebeast life and I definitely see skateboarding far more as a fashion accessory than anything else

I don't want to move to NY only for the skating. I want to move there because I genuinely love the city. Honestly, there's no other place I'd rather live at. Maybe the UK or Canada, but not really.I love living in the city. I never realized how much till I got stuck in this pos island. So, yeah.I plan to atleast visit NYC in the next few years just to get a taste of how it's like before I actually move there, tho.My plan is to ultimately leave Greece tho, so NYC or not, I wanna gtfo as fast as possible. Only got school, college and mandatory military service in the way of that at the moment, but I still got a long time for all those.Current goals are to get my driver's license and to finish HS and hopefully get into a college that isn't in the other end of Greece.

By the time you're done with all that, you might appreciate your shitty island more than you do now. I think you'd find the US a disappointment if you lived here for a few years. Not that it's bad, but it's not nearly the idealized version that is exported to the world through American media. NYC is fun to visit but shitty to live in. I think Philly is ideal for the whole East Coast vibe because it's a major city but not as much of a clusterfuck in terms of people and prices as NYC, and it's a 2 hour bus ride away.

^^ What cheese_wigger said. And I forgot to mention that Manhattan is also a shitty island, so it may be six of one and half a dozen of the other for you, Probably NerkaN Who Knows

i've realized medium sized cities that aren't too far of a drive from major cities are the way to go. you get all the benefits of living in a major city but it costs a lot less.

the city i live in now has a cool little downtown area and a lot of stuff to do but it's also halfway between chicago and detroit and not too far to drive to either.

I've been living here 6 years now, trust me when I say that I hate this place. Hated it from day one, still do.
Everything here is shit, and that's a lot to say for an island with such rich history. From the mindset of the locals to the driving skills of these retards, the condition of roads, the shitty mayor, and pretty much everything.
Just take everything that is wrong with Greece and make it 10 times worse, whilst making people 20 years behind mindset-wise.
If I don't move out of Greece, I'm definitely moving to Athens, no question. It's still shit and it's still Greece, but it's nowhere near as shit as this place.
I hope this island sinks and disappears.

Where do Greeks like to go if they emigrate? I'd probably move to Italy or Germany.

I really dont see all too many skater but there are still those dedicated skate-everyday dudes at the park. I really only skate alone though. I need to improve though, i fucking suck.

My city is alright but i live with a bunch of rich, snobby white people. I live right around the corner from a shopping center with a manny pad, parking block, bush gap, and shit ledges so i skate there a lot.

Who's got avatars and sigs disabled?

I've had them disabled for like two years now as it slowed things down on my now 8 year old laptop. Just realised I still have Buddig quotes in my sig, and a Lexus logo for my avy. I sold my Lexus over a year ago

got some "good news" today - getting shitcanned from my job

I guess the guy they hired to "add to the team" is actually just my replacement

the job kinda sucked so it's not a huge loss, but I would've liked to have more warning because it's always easier to find a different job while you're still employed

    fuck them tho

Do you get any compensation for being shitcanned?

It's always fun seeing who your replacement is, I found out who mine was at my old job. I'm not sure she'd fit into the team and the vibe is from my old boss that he finds it hard to get on with her
