-=MuTT=-
11-05-2006, 05:40 AM
Okay, where do I start.

For skill and instruments; I already play drums (5 years), guitar (1 year), piano (3 years) and a little bass, plus I might learn trumpet. I want an instrument I can do for fun, and just mess around with. I like turntables, they fun, they sound nice to me.

For the tables themselves; They're a Gemini kit. I'm either gonna just get that, or raise enough money to buy the equipment seperate, in which case it would be better tables. Direct Drive tables are incredibly expensive, so I need money.

About getting money; I live in a rish tow. I live in a rish state. My family has money. Getting a job around here isn't easy. People have lawn crews, places don't hire much, I have sports to play, I have school, I'm young.

My Age; I'm only 15. I turn 16 in December. Sophmore in high school. Did I really sound older?

I'm probabaly going to teach myself. I know a kid who is really good at scratching, so maybe I'll talk to him if I need to.

Do you guys know anything about Direct Drive vs. Belt Drive?

I know direct is better, but what are the facts

drowning_fish
11-05-2006, 09:23 AM
Direct is definitely better. Don't ever get belt. Belt drive uses a belt to spin the thing. Direct has it connected directly. Belt drives, because of the belt have poor torque and startup times, they skip because of lack of skip resistance and can break (you need to replace the belt(s) sometimes). So basically, direct is better. DON'T BUY BELT DRIVES.

It takes no skill to scratch either. You're taking music other people made and screwing it up to make a sound that's "cool".

what the fuck? "dj's" or whatever you wanna call them are fucking lame, geek.

drowning_fish
11-05-2006, 10:38 AM
Ay, it's not as simple as you described it. When you DJ at live events, you need to know tons of things. You have to learn how to read the crowd, like play stuff they want and familiarizing stuff for them. They might not know what the hell you're doing up there but if it sounds good to them, they'll dance to it and pick up the beat immediately (if you did it right.) You have to know how to match beats, which is synchronizing them so they flow well (extermely important and not as easy to do as you might think.) Juggling beats, scratching, mixing, etc. There's tons of things you can do, it's not simply limited to scratching as you seem to think...

Maybe next time you should actually try and learn about something rather than hating on it for no reason.

drowning_fish
11-05-2006, 10:48 AM
I'm not saying it takes absolutely no skill, but letting the computer do your work isn't exactly using all of your talents... It's not the same, like doing stuff on your computer. Your computer's not going to be there when you play live stuff is it? Most clubs have turntables and use them... I'd use computers to sample and stuff like that when making a CD or something but DJing live clubs and stuff, your computer will ditch you like a bad friend

There are programs you can get that automatically find the beat and match it up for you (no fun at all). And making beats on like furty loops is a completely diffrent thing all togeather. I know where your coming from though.

Like I said, I'm done arguing this, but just so you know, no computer "makes a beat for you". You don't just open a program, tell it what you want and get some amazing beat made. That would take no skill. Kinda like spinning old albums backwards and calling it music.

You kids make me laugh. "Modern graffiti is often seen as having become intertwined with hiphop culture as one of the four main elements of the culture (along with the Master of Ceremonies, the disc jockey, and break dancing), through Hollywood movies such as WildStyle. However, modern (twentieth century) graffiti predates hip hop by almost a decade and has its own culture, complete with its own unique style and slang."

drowning_fish

First off, it's bboying, or jsut breaking, not breakdancing. And no, there are 4 elements of hip hop including graffiti. Hip hop is hip hop no matter what each element achieves on its own. The reason you may think graffiti is seperate is since it's the only element that actually stayed underground (to a degree) while the rest are popular among the shallow folks. And uhh, most graffiti artists I've talked to talk the same as any other normal people... Maybe some graffiti slang, but that's included in all the other forms of hip hop too...

DJing-Rocking the crowd
Emceeing-Rocking the mike
BBoying-Rocking your body
Graffiti-Rocking the city

Graffiti-Rocking the city

...That was from Style Wars... I think it was pretty much the same as that anyway.

I didn't write that, idiot, thats why its quoted. Its an actual source, unlike you, some know nothing kid with no authority and hardly any experience (I don't care how long you've been tagging, you're less than 20 years old, you dont have experience in anything) acting like he's some kind of expert. Just because you think its true doesnt make it fact.

Yeah guys, listen to Mullensucks, he was quite a B-Boy back in the '70s/'80s. I mean, his knowledge and wherewithal of the Hip-Hop culture is just crazy guys.

But seriously, shut up. Stop acting like you're an expert too. None of us are. But, it's thouroughly safe to say that Graffiti is lagely accepted into the nature of Hip-Hop.

Look Mullen, an arguement rebutal without a swear or an insult. Ever seen one of those?

And so you don't say "wowzorz he stopped arguing because he lost"

I never said I was an expert... I'm sure I know more than you though. What do you do for hip hop? I don't think much since you bash DJing and stuff... But really, I'd like to know, what makes you any more of a knowledgable individual about hip hop than me or Mutt, or anyone else on this site for that matter?

Hahahahahahahah, can you read? I sited a source, as in, not just made shit up. But I like how you say none of us are experts, then go on to restate your point of view like its right. And "accepted into" and "a part of" aren't the same thing.

Yeah, I'm not expert nor do I have a specific source, but if you can call history a source, then I think I'll play that card.

There are plenty of white DJs. It's not about being ghetto, or acting black, it's a musical choice that I chose to make.

Uhh yeah, but do the people that review the articles know what they're talking about? Do they know about hip hop and actually do something for hip hop? Style Wars, for example, is one of the most popular movies among graffiti writers and it says graffiti has roots in hip hop. If you haven't seen it already, watch it. It's a good movie... Well I liked it anyway

Too bad most of wikipedia is bullshit no matter how many times it's editied. I've found so many articles that are just complete bullshit and every other source I've ever seen is against it. Even information about famous and well known things is often wrong. So just cuz some people moderated it doesn't mean it's true. I really think that site is a waste of space. Pick up a real encyclopedia (book form).

Example 2- It says Jimi Hendrix got his first guitar around the age of 14 when in fact he was 12, as said so by All Hendrix.

example 3- The movie summary for Stay Alive is way off, not even close to what happened in the movie.
