You're most likely going to want to get an electric, because you want to play "punk rawk" like Greenday right?

Squire, Ibanez, and alot of other companies offer starter packs that come with a guitar, 10-15 watt amp, strap, cable, and a soft carrying case.

www.musiciansfriend.com is a great site for comparing musical products and what not.
I've been playing for 6 years and play a Gibson SG with custom pickups, but I started out with a generic "Jay Turser" style guitar. Everyone has to start somewhere.

Get an electric

if you are just starting I would suggest a Squire or an Epiphone.

It does get boring, bass is better then guitar. Less strings, thicker strings and neck, you can slap and pop, wider frets, all equal hard to play. My friend is a great guitar play but Im better then he is on bass, even when I used a left handed bass.

Guitar isn't boring whatsoever, at least not to me.

I agree.

There is so many different styles of music to play and so much to learn, it's jsut all in all awesome.

You can learn so many different styles to play on any instrument.

I don't think any instrument can ever be boring, there's just so much room to experiment. With maybe the exception of triangles and whatnot (to all the asshats who are going to come in and try to be funny.)

It seems like there's more bassists than guitarists on sbc...

If you want to get a ton of gigs, play bass guitar and learn how to sing. Not many people are bassists who can sing, therefore everyone will want your skillz.

But if you want a guitar, go to a local music shop and try some out. Basically anything there will be great for you.

P.S. I play acoustic/electric guitar, fretless/fretted electric bass, stand up or double bass, and I can kinda play drums and keyboards.

People are actually very lucky nowaydays to have money to get a good guitar to start with. Legends like Slash, Jimi Hendrix, Pete Townshend, Jimmy Page.
Slash was given a 1 string acoustic guitar from his grandma, and he played on that for about 9 months, before stealing one from a guy. Jimi hendrix never had a guitar when he first started, he would usually go to the people who do have them and use theirs, then one day his friend gave it to him.
We are very lucky to have enough for a good guitar.
If i were you, pick out a guitar that plays your style. Dont get guitars that look cool, cause usually they sound like shit. I would get a Fender Strat, you can do many things with this guitar, its not heavy, small neck, you got a whammy bar, more controls. I mean just get the one you know you would enjoy.
And also, if you want to get good at it, you have to be willing to practice everyday for 3+ hours.

Good Luck!! If you need help with techniques and other stuff, come talk to me.

Fender Squires are a good guitar to start with.

I'm getting a Gibson SG for Christmas :D

EDIT:

You're really naive. I could say the same thing about skateboarding, and it would be equally true.
