What would skateboarding be without all the flare and unnecessary accessories? Take a look inside the bearing display case at any skate shop and you are bound to think you have stumbled across some kind of toy self. One thing is for certain- packing designers for skate bearings have gone buck wild over the past decade. Is this trend just another way to trick kids into buying bearings? From cute little bearing sized coffins, to plastic grenades, and collectible tins, to action figures and throwing stars, what we have now is an entirely new culture of "skate collectibles".
Admittedly, I cant deny taking part in this craze once in my life. I couldn't resist buying the ed Templeton- designed, pez dispenser-esque, one eyed-monster bearing dispenser. I mostly bought it because the dispenser added a unique touch to my already extensive pez collection, although I was also in need of new bearings at the time.
While some of the packaging is entertaining to say the least, don't be fooled. Just because a set of bearings comes in a cute or fancy package doesn't necessarily make them good bearings. Then again, maybe someday you'll be able hawk them on ebay and put yourself through collage.
