I have..no..money.
You know, these ones..just work..until I get more money. My parents owe me about $100 which will give me enough for a decent pop at a camera. The digital one is shared 50/50.

No, we shouldn't.
Want to know why?
Because then SP will turn into a place of dumbasses, just like this place. It'll get filled with spam and stupid questions that have already been asked before, and threads saying "AWESOME PICTURE" and its a stupid fucking video grab.

Are they really as automated as everyone around here says? I was talking to some photographer friends and they were talking about how the D40x was too automated and didn't require as much skill to operate. I wasn't totally sure though(Not trying to be a dick at all)
PS. Using my iBook insurance money to buy a D50 I'm pretty sure.

06-30-2007, 06:28 PM
^i don't think any camera is "easy" to operate. Its not really about the skill it takes to operate with the camera, but what you can do with it.
I'm thinking of buying a d40x. Nearly every camera has a feature to tell you if the photo is underexposed, even my Vintage EOS 650, and that was made in the 70's.

Thats sick your here Le Electric Chr! Im from the Cafe too. But yeah, just a heads up, a sigma 10-20mm isn't a fisheye. If you need a Nikon fisheye, 10.5mm F/2.8 is where its at.

Are they really as automated as everyone around here says? I was talking to some photographer friends and they were talking about how the D40x was too automated and didn't require as much skill to operate. I wasn't totally sure though(Not trying to be a dick at all)
PS. Using my iBook insurance money to buy a D50 I'm pretty sure.
hahaahha. nice one dude. but no, i'm not too automated. in fact i bought this for other reasons.
1. price.
2. weight.
3. beginner wise? i think automation helps, but yeah... i've been using slrs before. old school and film required. no automation.
skill is skill dude. regardless if you use automation or not, if you suck at what you do, automation won't help. automation helps but every function and every camera, you hold, requires you to learn it. and seriously, the next thing with d40x is d80. it's my price range dude. to be honest, i'd buy something better. ranging from nikon, pentax [yes i'm old school] olympus and such.
look it's this simple. find the camera you love. like i've said. the body [d40x, d80] is disposeable. the lens now that's really stackable. get as much as you can. from telephoto to wide angle, fish eye. then every other thing you need requires your skill. even cleaning it.
so, whatever your friends say [not to be a dick and all]. photography is a skill. regardless of what weapon you use. or how they call it too automated. if you take shitty photos, then it's shitty.
give me an old school kodak camera with old school film, and i'd still give you photography that i will say is my art. no automation.

Why don't you either not get the Pentax or get it and sell the Canon? That way you could save some money (if you don't get the Pentax, that's around $100) and with the money, you could get a Viv 285 HV with some slaves.

PENTAX K1000 Asashi
such a good fucking camera dude it's got all the orginal features that the updated models of it lack, the updated model has a slight shutter delay, this one has none of that shite and just pure features. It's a 35mm camera with a 50mm pentax lens, it doesn't have zoom but I don't need that, It got a roll in it at the moment and when I finish it off and develop I will be sure to scan and put up on here.

If you're looking at a DSLR, go looking at the Nikon D# range, or the Canon #D range. (# is any number).
If you're looking at a point and shoot, kodak easyshare and pentax optio are good to look at.

I am just starting out with photoghraphy. I have a Nikon D80. It's a great camera and I get some decent skate photos with it but I know it can produce much better pictures if I only knew how to adjust the settings. I shoot in the "S" mode (Shutter Priority) But I would like to shoot in the manual mode. I think I can adjust the other settings for a better shot. Anyone have any thoughts on how the others should be set? Outside on a sunny day.

Thanks AnimeYuuki,
I saw your guide on the other thread and it helped me big time. I think it's gonna be Nikon D40 or D40x for me. Went to the local shop to feel it out and i liked it. The owner let me and my dad go over his own D40x and we loved it.

oh man, a D80? Ok, the shutter priority mode is a good start, its how i started taking photos.
check your guide to learn how to adjust aperture and shutterspeed in manual mode. when you are adjusting your aperture, next to the numbers on the right, it will have things going on. there are three phrases that show up when adjusting your aperture in manual mode. the first is OP, meaning open your aperture, or slow the shutter speed down. the second is CL, meaning close your aperture, if this shows, you can also make your shutter faster. the third is 00, which means it is perfect to meter, and your photo will be perfectly exposed.

And there's also an Olympus film camera laying somewhere around the house. My dad was using it to take pictures of my sister's artwork so she could send them in for some contest or something. I can't remember exactly which one it was, but I think it might be this one.

Of course, it might not be. I don't have a photographic memory, so I can't perfectly remember what it looked like either.
For all I know, there are probably a couple more cameras. My dad owns all of them. He's told me about one or two others, so maybe I'll look for them someday.

I don't really give a shit about sequences, but I was on kenrockwell(Yeah homg wadda fag lololol), and he pointed out: "The D300 has better color (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/picture-control.htm), better highlights (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/dynamic-range.htm), better shadows (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d300/dynamic-range.htm), better AF, a far better finder, a better LCD, much sharper images due to automatic color fringe correction and triple the battery life than the D200 (http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/d200.htm)."
Just looking at that, I don't think I really need what I'm paying for in the d300.
CSB, do you have the battery grip for yours? If so, how many shots do you get? Any arguments with your camera?
CSkateBoarding

No, I don't have the battery grip for mine, but I have used one for a full shoot. I get around 500 shots out of a single battery without the grip, but when I used the grip I got over 1500 easily, and I still had juice left. I love my D200, it's an AMAZING camera.

I most often have to shoot with setups like this (Canon 1D Mark II and everything from Canon 14mm f2.8L wide-angle and 15mm fisheye lenses to a Canon 35-350 f4-5.6L zoom and many others in between...this one is shown on a Stroboframe bracket with Canon 24-70 f2.8L lens, 580EX flash, Quantum Turbo Z battery...a setup for portraiture more than anything else).
http://www.ruscelli.com/images/Biking/070822-004b.jpg
But I have more fun shooting in minimalist mode like this (Canon 1D Mark II with 15mm fisheye or other extreme wide-angle lens that gives a unique perspective on close-up action...close-up combined with extreme wide-angle is always interesting). Another photographer took these couple of shots of me while I was getting some close-up shots of racer pro racer Mike Sanchez at a Houston-area race park. The black modular belt pack I'm wearing allows me to carry a couple of extra lenses so I can switch to whatever I need without going back to my camera bag:
http://www.ruscelli.com/images/LR4P5066websmall.jpg http://www.ruscelli.com/images/LR4P5068websmall.jpg
And getting shots like this (some of these are fisheye shots, but cropped after the fact so that they don't show anything more than needed for the final desired visual effect):
http://www.ruscelli.com/images/GL5R5953websmall.jpg http://www.ruscelli.com/images/GL5R5949websmall.jpg
http://www.ruscelli.com/images/GL5R5937websmall.jpg http://www.ruscelli.com/images/GL5R5811websmall.jpg
The fisheyes and other ultra-wide-angle lenses just make things so much more . . . personal. :thumbup1:

Flash brackets = obnoxiousness.

Don't worry about feeling dumb about it. Not all camera equipment is needed by all people, so everyone is not going to know about every piece of equipment out there. It's not a dumb question at all.
Flash brackets are usually used by people who make their livings doing portrait photography. In my experience, most people who actually need and use them are either working pros or advanced amateurs who want to improve the results of their flash photography, mostly where people shots are concerned. One of the advantages is that brackets help to just about completely eliminate redeye by getting the flash well above the lens. Unless you're really far away from someone while doing a flash shot, you'll almost never get a redeye effect when using a flash bracket. They also help to throw shadows of people (those created by the flash) down and behind those people (where you generally don't see them in the final photo) instead of up and behind where the the shadow might appear on a wall and make the photo look bad. Using a flash bracket is generally about creating aesthetically pleasing photos when you have to use flash instead of getting washed out flesh tones, redeye reflections, and bad shadows.
The bracket in the photo also has a few other features that make it useful. For instance, it allows you to rotate the camera from horizontal to vertical right on the bracket and the flash stays in position above the camera lens no matter if you're shooting in the horizontal or vertical mode. That's great either when holding the camera setup freehand or when the entire bracket is mounted onto a tripod via a quick-release plate. Grab the camera by the grip, rotate it, and you can immediately go to vertical mode without turning the whole rig sideways. The big knob above the Quantum battery also allows the flash to be tilted at any angle so that the flash can be bounce from any surface (ceilings, walls, etc.) to soften the lighting and make people (or whatever the subject is) look good rather than washed out by too much flash. The flash can be tilted way forward or way backward with the bracket...much farther than with the built-in flash tilt alone. This flash bracket even has a small kickstand so that you can stand it up on its own (a bit of a dangerous practice where the safety of your camera is concerned, but useful in certain circumstances).
The Quantum battery allows you to shoot lots of flash shots and with very quick recycle time on the flash. You can shot a bunch of shots in rapid succession and get full power recharges in just a couple of seconds in most cases and shoot hundreds of flash shots in a row without having to switch batteries. That helps in low light situations where you are relying on flash and have to take lots of shots fairly quickly and in cases where you have to do that repeatedly over several hour's time. Again, that's mostly useful for working photographers. Most times you don't need such rapid recycle or to shoot hundreds of shots on the same battery unless you're actually working an event at night or indoors.
Flash brackets are also great for posers, too, because when you walk into a room with one, no one is quite sure whether you're a poser or a pro -- and they get out of your way just in case. :001_cool: :suspiciou
varuscelli
08-12-2008, 07:19 PM
PS,
I find flash brackets (and external batteries) heavy, bulky, awkward and generally a pain in the butt to use. But they also represent a case of using the right pieces of equipment at the right time to get the job done the right way when you need them. For some of us, they're a necessary evil. But I'd much rather have just a camera and lens in hand (no flash, no bracket, no external battery -- unless forced to use them based on the situation at hand).
sb dunks
08-12-2008, 07:38 PM
Thanks a lot for the explanation. The bracket would come very useful for me now that I know what its really for. Haha I just cant see myself carrying that around.
varuscelli
08-12-2008, 07:55 PM
You're welcome...
There are also much smaller brackets available and different styles that appeal to different people. That one above is a Stroboframe, a company that makes several different styles of brackets that are fairly popular. You also need a connecting cord that is designed as a connector between the foot of the flash and the hot shoe on the camera -- so the you've got to be sure that with your particular camera you can find the right connecting cord to allow your camera and flash to work together if placed on a bracket. On the setup above, there is one connecting cord between the camera and flash and another connecting cord between the flash and the Quantum battery. But you don't have to have an external battery to use a flash bracket (battery and battery cord are just optional extras). But, you do need a proper cord to connect the camera and flash.
