Just do the cover of it, don't change a thing. It doesnt fucking matter what country you're from you have the write to do a cover of the song and anyone who has a problem with it(Stuck up british idiots who dislike america) are absolute morons.

The problem is that I want to keep it as it is, but it really doesn't make a lot of sense having an American say "I don't want to change the world. I'm not looking for a new England."

And besides think of how stupid you'd sound saying something else, everyone would think you have something against England.

If you're doing a cover of the song, cover it. Don't change the words around. If someone gives you shit than that's on them.
