I'm a big fan of the Nintendo game boy series and i grew up with them and i spend my whole life next to them and to this day i take and play a pokemon game.I'm going to combine two things i love most:Music and games.

I don't know how many of you know about chiptunes music. It's basically made combining the tunes of Game boy colour sounds and making the "beats" and everything on the gbc and then for futher control with a midi keyboard and the all through a computer you get the stuff done.Additionally the "dj" program on the game boy that is used it called LSDJ

This is a well done example of chipmunk music.
2x game boy + 2x LSDJ + LSDJMC2 + KP3 = Turtles dnb remix - YouTube

I have never in my life done something like this, never had any experience with soldering or any modification on chips and such.
So far i found a soldering iron and i'm learning to use it.

The to do list:
1.Find GBC (done)
2.Get the LSDJ rom(done)
3.Start the modding(done)

I will be keeping you updated on this, filming youtube videos possibly if the interest arises.
Wish me luck,I will be needing it.

If any of you can give me feedback on this midi keyboard that would be swell.

SO far i build a cable to connect the midi keyboard to the GBC.SO far so good.

Small update.

I read a lot so far(too much if you ask me).You can't connect through the small cable i made, the system is much more complex than that(sadly).Anyway i found what i am going for after the whole setup of gameboys is finished. The two i had got fried because my bad soldering iron though it was funny to start melting in my hand.Today i'm picking up two more which are waiting for me in the postal office.

I will buy the connectors, resistors and more wires and do some serious modding on the gameboys(backlight, better jack for sound and much more) while waiting for the catridge for the DeeJaay software.
I will have to find a "Quality" soldering iron to prevent destroying more devices. So far i have around 6 gameboys in my collection, ordering another one.

Anyone who wants me i can start making videos of the progress and everything. For people to see how the whole thing functions and how i am working on the gameboys motherboards and such.

SOrry for the big text but a update was needed. Hope you guys are stoked as i am to see the end result

I can't agree more. The thought process, designing and then working on it is just aweosme. Not even starting with the music how fun it is to put your thoughts into a form that everyone can enjoy.

Small update: Tomorrow morning 2 channel mixer is arriving(behringer xenyx 502)

Needing one more gameboy colour for a mod i have been planning to be able to connect the gameboy straight to the mixer(RCA jacks inside the gameboy)

http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/22210_10151352900397070_1998465159_n.jpg

need a motherboard which works and i only have one which i will use for normal work flow, don't wanna be left without a small gameboy unmodded.

Left one in the pic custom painted(was see through now it's black see though -ish) Hope you enjoy the update.

There we go whole modded gameboy.Custom painted buttons and the protective screen. Also added a RCA jack to it so can have better quality sound coming out of it(stronger bass and cleaner tunes)

This is the whole setup so far,the other gameboy might just be the phone with an emulator to play the lsdj software for music making as i don't have 2 catridges.

So two songs are in the making,a local dj got to hear it on the big set before he played. He loved it,generally anyone who hears the whole idea about making a song on gameboy loves it.So far so good. After it's finished i shall post it.

Hahah i'm getting more and more inspired to work harder as people are stoked on this.

Also i was thinking as most of you here are listeners of good music,so i had a question for you guys.
What do you think of song.pretty heavy beats and generally whole thing is pretty much down right ass kicking, but the thing is i was going to add HC vocals to it.Would you be actually listening to something like that.I don't listen to HC that much but i think this would be cool.Everything of course filmed and done live, besides the text.

Well the current problem i have is i can't find an artist name(I was thinking about PixelDust, but everyone keeps telling me it's hella gay haha).Finishing up one song, should be done by friday. On saturday i'm playing it at a DnB gig of a friend, mostly to see peoples reaction(so far only been positive about this song i made).

UPDATE

Going to play at the gig tonight,i will be alongside 3 DJs.I got 2 songs.1 is my own work which i have finished today second one will be a remix i'm doing of a already great song done by another artist.I will try to film it,because i'm pretty stoked and i think this will lead to something fucking awesome.

I'm really pumped and i'm trying to kinda' share the vibe with you guys here.

now, this sounds cool and everything...

but wouldn't it be a lot simpler to just record the gameboy sounds you want and sample them, then load the samples in to a midi controller? or am I missing something here?

because back when I used to make beats a lot I made a few with snes sounds. and that's what I did.

it's not the same when you come to a gig with only a gameboy and a mixer. It kinda ruins the point for me.I wanted this project to be computer less so mostly analog. But i don't wanna use any computer stuff besides recording. And it sounds much much better playing from gameboy directly than from computer. And how often do you see someone banging with his gameboy in his hand :D

I think you need to get some better sounds, not trying to offend, but there was really nothing in there to keep my interest, just sounded like a bunch of jumbled GB noises with a back beat. The 2nd song had potential until that static scratch noise kept looping. Should try getting some Mega Man bits in there cause those games always had really good music.

Thanks for feedback,i don't wanna get only praised and such.I want to hear how i can improve.SO far the transitions are a bit too long how one DJ said and maybe getting more interesting sounds in there like you said would pop up the song.

I'll try, don't really know too much i will slowly progress.Never had any contact with with music in such a way like producing it so it's more or less just from listening to stuff and such.I'll try to work on stuff and of course i can imagine after a while it will be better.
But one thing is sure it doesn't sound so nice when i record it.It's much much better over gameboy.

I don't agree with what some people have said. I dig the sounds! I actually think you need to work more on your melodies, they don't sound particulary harmonic or interesting in my opinion, which is exactly what's so important for chiptune (again, in my opinion). Don't get me wrong I think it sounds cool and the way it's produced is awesome. I'm looking forward to hearing more!

So in a month i will organize a party in a decent club. 8-bit rave
There will be 4 Djs(or even 5 if a foreign dj is still here when the part should take place)
projectors with SNES and other consoles attached to them so people can actually play a bit.
Drinks and all from the club supplied.

and best of all...STRIPPERS

That's for the big news.Gonna work with a lot of other people soon and maybe i'll finish a song by today.

Just wondering, what software are you using to arrange your tunes?

Everything is done on the gameboy, throught the program LSDJ.It's a sequencer more or less.Gives you the ability to make sounds and use them.Kind of like massive for ableton for example.

I kinda get the kicks from the limitations. But i'm trying to decide on somehting now which i can use with midi out(this way i can for example connect it to another gameboy running synth program)
Don't really know.Maybe a synth maybe a drumpad(might buy launchpad for ableton live use to combine it with my gameboy and synch those two.)

Open for recommendations :D

Yeah the last one was really trying to go for the minimalistic feel.
I might make some extra empty parts(or prolong it) for the party i'm playing at to be able to use a friends synth just to add a solo,How does that sound?:D

"Kolko bita tolko muzike"

In serbia there is this expression how much money that much music:"Kolko para tolko muzike" and we changed the para(money) into bita(bites)

first we got the nerdy part which is 8-bit music and live sets, everyone is doing something live.Cutting songs making them live on stage or just making loops from movies and oter bits and songs to make a song(kneeJah).

I will try to get a livestream or something but so far we don't have one haha.

EDIT:also :"Sve vase baze su pripadaju nama"
i the literall translation of "all your base are belong to us"(the wrong translation from the japanse version of Zero Wings game)

I have a launchpad and it's awesome with Ableton. I have been using Ableton a lot lately and I'm starting to get the hang of it. I usually use FL but I enjoy Ableton's ability to jam with ease (especially with a launchpad). It just sucks having to relearn all the functions that I have on lock with FL, but it's all good.

I think the launchpad is worth the $100, for sure. You would seriously open up another world of capabilities with Ableton or FL, you should check them out.

the lsdj kinda works like ableton.Just have to learn kinda to use launchpad.Seems most reasonable.or maybe a synth for solos and such. But ableton can do also melodies so it's all chil. And i tap a lot with my fingers and i can imaginebeing good with launchpad.

my set was around 40minutes,i think a bit longer.

Previous dj bored the people more or less. When i got on the mic and started playing the whole thing just filled up and people were dancing. It was epic.

We had some technical problems and most of us who played were stoned.I think that was the best part that i managed to play freaking good even though i was too stoned.
