I didn't know who that was until I listened to a couple of songs on YouTube and I can say only one thing. Eww.

Don't judge Lou Reed based on Lulu, haha.

Or the other 90% of his solo material that's complete garbage.

That 10% though...

(Probably more like 95-5)

Blue Mask? A little less popular than Transformer, but people still seem to like it. It's more somber and less gay. I like it better actually.

It stands out to me cause Robert Quine plays on it. And he's awesome. One of my favorites ever. Plus the bassist for some reason is real great too.

That solo!

Legendary Hearts is the followup to Blue Mask, with the exact same lineup. Not as good, but still good.

But let's backtrack a bit. Nevermind that s/t. What about Berlin? Maybe the most depressing Lou album? And maybe the most depressing album of all time? The last track is Sad Song for godsakes. And it's real good too, besides.

Now forget Rock and Roll Pigeon, Sally Can't Screw, etc etc. I never got MMM myself. Sure, it's funny. Sure I'd like to have sex to it, just to say I did. Other than that it's not very fun.

But then he crapped out a gem called Street Hassle. You might be as pleased as I was to hear where this riff actually came from:

Lou Reed - Street Hassle (complete music video) - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkG9BKgDvNI)
This is on it too: Lou Reed: I Wanna Be Black - YouTube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ehoomjQjfI)

(I always thought this was funny: Look up the album art for Street Hassle. Then look up Slow Dazzle by Cale.)

After that I haven't heard much, and what I have heard has been garbage (for the garbagiest of the heap, check out the live album Take No Prisoners, in which he does more stand-up than music. Includes a wonderful phone sex conversation with none other than Robert Christgau.)

Except way way later, when I was 1 year old, I guess I managed to suck the life force out of two of Louie's friends, which made him get off his butt and actually make a proper album. Magic and Loss. (this 3 years after doing Drella with Cale, which you know about already right? If you haven't checked it out yet though, do. It's wonderful.) Maybe more depressing than Berlin, maybe not. But gooooooooooooooooooooood nonetheless.
