No, i'm not asking for, offering, or any sort of business with pirating

i've always used torrents, rarely, but recently i've been downloading a lot of music. and my go-to way of doing this is torrenting it. i've never once stopped to think about if there is actually any legal risk. i'm talking like 20 songs a night.

the other night my brother's friend was talking about it, cause my brother downloads movie via torrent a lot, and he asked me if i did. I told him I use it for music and he said that was really bad/risky or something along those lines, i barely remember i was pretty stoned.

so anyways, is there really any danger? opinions?

theres always gonna be a danger in downloading shit illegally. doesnt matter what you use. but so many people are doing it i doubt anything will ever happen. it could, but highly unlikely.

Well, I know that much, i'm just curious if only people who download in huge amounts get in trouble, or if they just fuck random people they choose

I think it depends more on your regional laws, but over in Japan illegal downloading is heavily fined and monitored. Now that I'm in Australia I can download to my hearts content though, I usually download 6-8 albums each month all in the same night, never had anything close to being caught or getting a virus. You should just always be cautious with the number of seeders/leechers and file size, if you're looking for an album and you see one with hundreds of seeders and another one with 20, I'd take the 20, just in case. I've downloaded over 1,000 songs in a night, nothing happened.

Usually depends more on your laws and internet providers though.

i cant remember what i downloaded, i think it was a tv show or movie or something a long ass time ago and i got an email from someone through nbc that i had went against there copyright, so i deleted it as fast as i could and didnt download anything for awhile after that. havent had a problem since then. my assumption is that its just luck of the draw. theres an incredibly small chance you could get fucked, but its possible and thats the risk you take from downloading free shit.

Well... You could download behind a VPN if you are really picky about getting caught.
Aside from legal trouble, many people bind viruses within torrent files.

haha pretty much confirmed what i already knew. my buddy got some warning from his internet provider for torrenting halo 3 or some shit, i remember how pissed his mom was.

so aside from virus' (which i'm hardly worried about as is), i'm pretty much good to go. I've been using filesharing shit since i was 11 and never paid it much thought.

I downloaded a couple of albums last night, but other than that, I'd only ever downloaded like maybe, 10 songs every few months, if that.
And it was my first time using torrenting too so I was sketched out about seeders and whatever, I don't even know what they are really, someone care to fill me in? (if it's not against SBC rules or whatever)
Before that I just used limewire lolol
Haven't got a virus yet, and they seem pretty easy to stay away from.

If my internet downloading was substantially faster, I would probably be tempted to download tv shows and shit.

But if someone ever threatened me with copyright infringement, I'd just offer to pay the cost of the songs, that's like $17?
I remember that lawsuit with some kid for downloading like 5 songs and he got sued something in the millions, which will always stay in the back of my mind.

I get all my music from torrents, and I've never once gotten a warning or anything for that. Movies/TV Shows on the other hand I've gotten about 3 or 4 warnings from various studios (NBC/Universal seems particularly intent on tracking torrents).

So for music you're good to go. For movies/tv, go for the file with less traffic (less likely to be the one that's being tracked). And check the comments if it has them, someone will usually mention if they got a warning from the file.

Seeders are people who are sending the file to you, making it faster.
Leechers are people who just download and don't seed.

Ah k, kinda obvious haha
I think I made it so I'm a seeder. I wonder if I get pinged, if I could get pinged for distribution too?

You automatically seed.

You can leech by making your max upload 0.
Your internet will be less effected by the torrent then.

Obviously there is danger, I know several people who have gotten phone calls from government agencies telling them they need to stop using torrents or they will take legal action, but no one I know as gotten sued.

In this economy the person who's job it is to pursue people for stuff like that is out of a job, or at least should be if they're from the government.

because the movie and video game industry aren't million dollar industries if not billion dollars?

Also, the worst thing that could happen is a stern " don't do that again" Or a virus. Although in about a year, your ISP can turn off your internet completely for torrenting. I don't know the whole details though.

me and my friend got some sketchy warning letter to our house one time but nothing ever happened

^seems like thats the most that will happen... you'll get some weird email warning, usually i guess people see that and back off for a while, and then nothing ever happens.

i'm assuming the only way you could actually get really screwed with it would be if you were downloading crazy amounts of expensive software or something, and even still you would probably need to download A LOT of software.

depends on the site you use really. they only ever bother with giant public trackers that'll get thousands of users a day for a single torrent. i got a letter for downloading a game from demonoid a while ago and it freaked me out enough to switch to private trackers only. haventlookedbacksince
what happens is that when they watch a swarm, they only see the ip addresses. so all they can really do with that is complain to your provider. it used to be with most providers that if they got 3 or so complaints they'd just kick you off, once in a blue moon would somebody actually get in legal trouble. but they've been under a lot more pressure lately (protect IP act)

ive known around ten people who've been arrested.

the fbi just rolled up to his house and demanded his hard drive, went to their car and were checking it out, then they called the local police and they all got arrested.

most of them got off because they couldnt prove it was them, but not all were so lucky.

if you want music, find music blogs. rather than getting 100 random songs, you can get six albums from new artists.

its insanely rare for anyone to get in trouble for it

the guys from the pirate bay have been arrested a few times but never imprisoned as far as i know

and i hear that people who downloaded a certain movie got busted but i never actually found an article on it or anything

Thats the thing, i never download entire albums. considering some artists may only have 2 or 3 good songs in an entire album.

naw man, listening to whole albums gets you into way better music. you get to hear the experimental songs of an artist.

it's like people recommending black flag, to an amateur punk enthusiast. they'll recommend TV Party, Six Pack, and Rise Above. but you never get to hear any of the better stuff because the person just wants to hear the most popular songs.

I never use torrents for music, I've heard mediafire is safer and that's what I use. All you need is winRAR or a similar program.

wait, then why bother wasting time with torrents? use filestube or something, the reason i stated torrenting was so i could download entire albums quicker and easier.

and if it matters, ive downloaded over 10gb of music, several movies, every series of weeds and several other shows, rosetta stone, and a ton of other programs, and i have yet to be arrested

. Well actually I don't really download music unless the artist has made it free...I stream music from youtube/other sites like that mostly and usually buy full albums.

But if you're worried about being caught torrenting, it's probably a good idea not to post that you torrent music on a website...

i heard the google album name mediafire method isnt really detectable to your isp. like it shows up the same as someone watching a shit ton of youtube. thats just what i heard dont quote me on that.

most isp's dgaf as long as you don't go over their cap and they don't get any complaints/subpoenas.

that sounds possible, plus i'm pretty sure there's ways you can make it so nothing you do in a browser is detectable. you can probably do that with torrents too but idk..

I got caught once trying to torrent a movie. Didnt get any notice, they just shut our internet off and once I called them they said it was a warning and If I was caught again they would shut down my internet for good. But as far as music i havent had any problems whatsoever.

yeah nothing to write home about, but it's good enough. just select "high quality" when you're about to download.
