View Full Version : Lil Wayne - over, under, or well rated?

Personally, I like Lil Wayne. Didn't particularly love his Rebirth album and Tha Carter III was alright. His mixtapes are typically pretty good, though, and he's featured in a TON of music in which he usually sounds pretty good...

Anyway, bottom line, what do you think 'bout Lil Wayne?

Oh, just to clarify, I'm very aware Weezy has *much* more music than what I listed. I was just listing a couple examples. :)

Tha Carter I was fucking fantastic. and since then he does come up with some crazy shit. He really does have a way with words but generally his music is shit now and has been for years.

On some level he even seems like, a, I dont want to say intelligent guy...but maybe a little more up there than you'd think. FYI i dont know shit about lil wayne-and the only songs ive listened to on a regular basis are from carter 3, So im probably not the best source.

This. And how he obviously writes his "freestyles". And how there's obviously no real soul/creativity in his songs, just the same "imagangsterguyz" shit over and over so he/his record label can make cash off suburban kids who like to pretend they're gangster shit cause they listen to rap and sold a gram of weed one time.

hes overrated.
The fact that his lyrics are ghost written make him lose all credibility to me, i dont hate him, and i do admit, that his flow is quite unique. but if a rapper cant write his own lyrics, the they shouldn't be a rapper.

The only thing that pisses me off is when people who know nothing about rap dare to say hes the best.

for me, it really depends on how the process of ghost-writing goes. i have no idea how wayne does it but dre gets people to write lyrics and then heavily critics it until it's perfect so i can still respect that. still dissapoints me nonetheless but at least it's not straight up copying. weezy on the other hand, i have no idea how his ghost-writing process goes so i wont comment on it

tupac and biggie have both been dead for over a decade so why should every kid who likes hip hop today be able to list a bunch of their songs. sure, i think it'd be great if everyone still listened to biggie and pac but i think this is a stupid reason to disregard somebody's opinion. but i realize that you are talking about the stupid ignorant kids who think the radio is the only source of rap music

Even today and in recent times - I believe there are other people besides 2pac and Biggie who deserve a lot of attention. They aren't the only two quality names in hip-hop, both amongst the dead and the living.

But when I found out he picks up a guitar I thought I could respect him for at least attempting to be a bit more than a rapper... then I saw him play :/ that instantly killed it and now I hate him even more than if he just would have remained a shitty rapper.

Yeah man I mean I mostly listen to underground because it's just the stuff I like. Most mainstream stuff, I just really do not like the sound of it. Although some mainstream is good, like I don't mind kid cudi and kanye's got some good stuff, same with common. he definitely not the best, but he's not terrible. id say hes somewhat overrated at this point, because there are plenty of other good rappers that are better than him lyrically. i think the only reason most people say hes the best rapper is because 1) he's extremely mainstream 2) his voice is different and easily recognizable and 3) his beats are fye. on a lyrical standpoint, id say his new shit is slightly better than soulja boy when he's rapping for real and not making bullshit songs, which isn't saying much. his old shit was good tho.

wayne has no flow and his lyrics are shitty. And 90s beats? Why don't you actually listen to some of the artists I listed. Slug and Brother Ali get beats from Ant, who if you actually knew anything about hip hop you would acknowledge his raw beats. Same with Eyedea and Abilities. Sorry I don't like those glamourized bullshit beats wayne uses. "a milli a milli a milli a milli" yeah because that's such a good beat. Clearly not all hip hop has a message, I'm just saying that hip hop that does have a message is 99% of the time 1000x better than garbage lil wayne. Did I say I was cool because I listen to "old shit?" I mean, even though everybody on that list has released an album in the past few years, with the exception of pac and biggie, i guess it's old. lyrics and flows no one on that list could touch? Allow me to reiterate:
YouTube - APATHY "love lock down" (LIL WAYNE T-PAIN KANYE DISS) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dgEKhAYRGFw)
YouTube - B. Dolan "Earthmovers" **OFFICIAL VIDEO** (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf2sxN6vSQ4&playnext=1&list=PL7567DE7E636FDE5C&index=3)
YouTube - Atmosphere - Trying To Find A Balance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gbEwHJX95QE)
oh and nas is on that list, i've never heard anybody on this forum say anything bad about nas. Why? because he's a legend, way better than wayne. So remind me again why I should respect wayne for editing his vocals as much as possible, stealing lines from other artists, and rapping slow?

you're either retarded, or never listened to any song of the artists shockwave posted. how the fuck is biggie a responsible artist? and i'm pretty sure he has a crazy flow. im pretty sure eyedea's (r.i.p.) has an original flow with the way he pronounces words and can freestyle circles around wayne. rap with a "message" is how hip-hop started and how it was supposed to live on. it wasn't supposed to evolve into mumbling simple ass metaphors without a topic. don't get me wrong, i ain't knocking young money as i whole. i love drake, corey gunz and tyga. but wayne definitely isn't contributing to hip-hop...

Never heard one good metaphor that was beyond the intelligence of a 4th grader in any of his songs.

This post is fucking hilarious. "Message" in old rap "responsible artist". Most old raps alot more vicious than the pussy shit that passes as rap nowadays. Listen to an NWA song tell me what kind of messages it has. There is plenty of great rap people just want to listen to the shit they are fed. I honestly dont know an intelligent person who proudly listens to wayne.

YouTube - lil wayne freestyle EPIC FAIL (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ilNZl3hk4rw) This is lil wayne

YouTube - Slug, Aesop Rock, Immortal Technique, Poison Pen etc. (FREESTYLE) *RARE* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c3fUHidR6Xk) real freestyle
and a lil wayne song YouTube - Lil Wayne - The Carter 2 - Fireman (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQ3HDljK4CU)
yeah lil wayne is so good... amazing lyrics right? He totally deserves to be at the top of the game. No. Just off the top of my head, 20 rappers with better lyrics than wayne
Aesop Rock
Immortal Technique
Eyedea
Slug
El-P
Tupac
Sage Francis
Sleep of Oldominion
Diabolic
Apathy
B Dolan
Cage
Biggie
Brother Ali
POS
Murs
Macklemore
Nas
RA the Rugged Man
Sadistik
Mac Lethal
That was actually 21 but...
Wayne is garbage in comparison to every one of those rappers, and I could keep going. Basically in comparison to them, wayne is a 6 year old, while they are aged college professors and legendary writers. Wayne is the best? Not even close.

HAHAHA ookay. Let's make blind assumptions about people over the internet who we know nothing about. Most, if not all of Aesop's stuff is allegorical (IF you know what that means) or metaphorical, and completely up for interpretation. Aesop Rock himself said that his music means whatever you interpret it to mean. Look man aes is on of my favorite rappers, i'm not gonna listen to him if i don't understand at least SOMETHING from his songs. So uhh yeah, I'll just give you proof that I know something about what aesop is saying.

In his song "Pigs" Aesop Rock is referring to the disgusting nature of man.

"If Noah had the benefit of hindsight on his ship
He could've snatched two unicorns and left behind the motherfucking pigs." In this I take pigs to be a symbol for men, as in Noah and his family. "Asshole... pigs!/God damn... pigs!/Potbelly... pigs!/Punch-drunk... pigs!/Take money, money... pigs!/Loudmouth... pigs!/Wide load... pigs!" Dude I don't know, that sure sounds like humans to me. Throughout the entire song parallels can be found linking pigs to humans.

But I don't know, I guess I've got no idea what he's saying.

Aesop himself said that his songs can have many different interpretations. Have you ever dealt with a metaphor (that's not a crappy lil wayne one) before? They're ALL UP FOR INTERPRETATION. You can interpret them however you want, sometimes it may be clear what the writer was trying to say in the metaphor, sometimes it's not. Seriously, go take a high school english class and get a basic understanding of what an allegory is.

And SSJoe ""Most, if not all of Aesop's stuff is allegorical (IF you know what that means) or metaphorical, and completely up for interpretation"

Would Wayne be any better if I said this about him? "
No that would not make Wayne any better because it wouldn't be true about him. Whereas it is true about Aesop, since he himself said that.

Whatever I'm done arguing with dumbasses who can't understand that it's possible to interpret something in more than one way... cause apparently you guys can't interpret something at all.

comparing him this way makes sense:

he's a modern day mainstream rapper. so you have to compare him to modernday mainstream rappers.

people to compare him too: Rick Ross, T.I. , Jay-z, Soulja Boy, Gucci Mane, Waka Flocka Flame, Eminem, Kanye West, Nicki Minaj, Drake, Wiz, Kid Cudi, and other mainstream rappers.

Hahah I actually kind of have to agree with you there. Because some songs he purposely puts meaning into them, but he said that some of his songs don't make sense because it's for the listener to put meaning into.

But seriously, I didn't mean to turn this thread into Aesop Rock vs Lil Wayne. Only reason I posted that aesop song instead of ANY other song that I could have posted was because i've been listening to him a lot lately so it was the first song that popped into my mind.

I don't like any of the rappers you listed, except i don't mind eminem, kanye, and kid cudi. But eminem completely destroys lil wayne, that should be clear just by listening to the tracks they've done together. And I guess you've kind of got a point, but as Floydian said Wayne used to be underground too, and I mean they're all rappers so they've got something in common, even though the styles are so completely different between Wayne and rappers like the ones I posted.

Well considering the mainstream rap scene is really a joke, and some of the most unintelligent people on the face of the earth as a fanbase, then I'm gonna say it's hard to compare shitty material to other shitty material. Anyone can say "oooohh you dont like it because its mainstream". Nooooo, but honestly you cant compare it to alot of mainstream rap out there because it's flat out bad. I've heard "well I dont care about them they dont make music anymore", and "what are they all some chinese rappers?". This saddened me...

Just a random thought: The only thing I dislike about Weezy 100% is his "wheezy/gaspy" voice in some of his tracks. Sometimes it sounds like he sucked down too many cigs before making some of his songs.

hes overrated.

How do you feel about Eazy-E?

Lil Wayne is alright I can listen to him for a bit but all day. Hes a good rapper but not the best rapper.

Being an independent label is irrelevant if you're still producing masses of commercial music. Having already released 1000+ tracks is just proof that he unloads piles of shit and people lap it up. Releasing an ambient album is nothing to be proud of, pseudo-deep electronica is one of the most overdone genres in music. He probably did it purely so he & his moronic fans can try justify his brilliance.

just because you're butthurt and you can't appreciate music thats not always LOL SERIUS doesnt mean everyone else has to be a stuck up butt pirate like you are. uk hip hop? LOL. you say that like the USA doesn't have millions more hip-hop artists, it's where hip-hop originated... the UK has nowhere near the number hip-hop artists the USA has, and nowhere near the level of talent.

I can tell you're the type who dismisses music based on what you think it is and who you think listens to it. nobody laps up lil b's music, and he doesn't even make money off what he releases on the internet. free mixtape downloads he puts out is solely for his fans, what is more hip-hop than that?

to say lil b doesn't do it "for the music" is blasphemy, you just are too much of an ignoramus to give people like him and wayne a chance to listen to their music for what it really is. I can tell you base your opinion over trivial shit.

"I've never met anyone with anything like a good taste in music who doesn't detest Lil Wang. "

lil wang? is that really the best you have? even if you don't like an artist, there's no real reason to "detest" them. you and "everyone you met" all must be butthurt brits that have no type of swag and you can't feel hiphop that is made to just sound hot.

you don't appreciate hip-hop on a musical level, you give it way too much thought and are extremely close-minded. but then again you're from BRITAIN so I don't expect you to be understand hip-hop culture because you've never been exposed to it.

I know the UK has garbage commercial hip-hop as well (that's actually a lot worse than the USA, compare the streets to lil wayne..) but both countries have good underground hip-hop, because the best lyricists aren't people on the radio, I agree with that, but that doesn't mean I don't love hot songs blasting through the subwoofers of my truck.

So much truth in this post. UK Hip hop is awesome, straight up.

I seriously do not understand how anyone could defend Wayne at such lengths. I hate him no doubt, but I don't care if other people like him. "Lil Wayne is at the top of the games, best rapper alive, no questions." Seriously? How could anyone think that? I don't understand how anybody could listen to him let alone like him that much. He's just straight up annoying. It sounds like his music was written by a six year old.

Alright here is a song that has lil wayne in it (I hate the song btw)YouTube - Chris Brown Ft. Busta Rhymes & Lil' Wayne - Look At Me Now W/ Lyrics ( New 2011 Hip Hop ) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3zQzBVcHwHI)
now chris brown was terrible in it, like his part just sucked. Busta rhymes killed it no doubt. But then it gets to lil wayne and it's terrible. I'm not even trying to be biased. I can't stand it. Even some of my friends, who like lil wayne, admit that his part sucks.

I'm Lil Tunechi, I'm a nuisance, I go stupid, I go dumb like the 3 stooges
I dont eat sushi, I'm the shit, no I'm pollution, no substitution

"I don't eat sushi"? What the heck does that have to do with anything he just said?

and my mommas nice and my daddy's dead
you faggots scared cause I'm too wild, been here for a while
I was like fuck trial I puts it down
I'm so young money if you got eyes look at me now bitch

"and my mommas nice and my daddy's dead" That's completely off topic too. It has nothing to do with anything else he was saying. He just goes off topic with filler rhymes in an attempt to make his songs longer.

His lyrics suck, no questions. His voice is extremely annoying. His flow is crappy. His beats are annoying. So what is it that makes people like him so much? Is it because he constantly claims to be the best rapper alive, so it gets into your mind that somehow he is?

Oh, and please stop saying we're close minded because we don't like to listen to garbage. If I was close minded I probably wouldn't have found any real, good hip hop in the first place.

Seriously, the ignorance of some people astounds me.

Pre-2008 lil wayne had more soul and lyrical content than any rapper. After 2008, his wordplay and metaphors got a hell of a lot better but he entered the mainstream and doesn't rap about any real shit any more. But name a rapper in the mainstream who does?

But still, people who say lil wayne raps about nothing are right. Oh and Kid Cudi is a mainstream rapper who has at least some substance. I mean it's not like a lot of meaning but it is more than what I've heard from Wayne. Same with Eminem, who used to be pretty dope although I've been dissapointed with his recent stuff.

And alright that quote actually seems halfway decent, up until the part about black people still voting. I don't really like it from there. But you should link the song, because I want to see if it sounds good. See I really just cannot stand Wayne's delivery, I've said this over and over again but I think he's just annoying.

i dont even know how many times ive said this but, not everyone likes listen to some asshole bitching about the trials and tribulations of life, all the time. some people actually have a more diverse appreciation for music and can enjoy more than one subject matter in a song.

O hai everybody, I'm retarded because I actually know how to support an argument, instead of repeatedly saying "Lil Wayne is the greatest rapper ever, no questions" without anything to back it up. You are seriously such a dumbass, I don't know how anyone could be so ignorant.

And people should actually listen to UK Hip Hop before forming an opinion. Because this YouTube - Rhyme Asylum - Poison Penmanship (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5cvjZEQ2nP4) is pretty sick. Granted it takes a little while to get used to the accent, but once you do it's pretty awesome.

HAHAHA why don't you actually listen to some artists i listen to. My top rappers are: Eyedea, Sage Francis, Slug, and Tupac. Pretty sure everybody on that list has songs about just being a good rapper, as well as other topics. And the thing is, any topics they do share with lil wayne, they usually do it way better than him. And I like rappers with variety, not just rapping about the same thing all the time.

Well the thing is we are arguing about opinions. Your opinion is that lil wayne is the best, i strongly disagree and i stated why i disagree. you just continously repeated that he is the best. Whatever though, there really is no point in arguing over opinions so i don't know why i'm even trying.

I think the main reason people are turned off by UK rap is because the accents sound weird when you're used to american hip hop. But I like the accents, just takes a while to get used to.

Forgot to mention Jehst, goes without saying.

I'm not from England but I actually think Jehst is possible THE greatest rapper of all time. I love complex lyricists like Big L, NAS (illmatic), Biggie etc but Jehst just takes it to another level and is way more versatile and poetic and the same time. Around here American Rap is waaay bigger and people look at me like I'm crazy when i say some guy they never heard of (Jehst) is the best but its truth.
