What are your thoughts on the chances of it hitting earth, and what Russia is planning on doing to deflect it?
I myself doubt it's going to hit, but we never know.

But like it says in the article that what they are doing might actually send it to us rather than deflecting it. Wouldnt that be keen?

I honestly hope it does happen..
I've got to die sometime, and if I had a choice between dying of liver failure, or dying in THE FUCKIN APOCOLYPSE, then I must say, it's not really a choice for me.
That way, I don't have to worry about the wonderful scientific advances made after I die, the lovely music I'll miss out on, the hilarious movies I'll never watch.. Because there won't be any..
Sure it's selfish, but I'll be dead, what do I care?

Yeah, I understand what you mean. What better way to go out than with the rest of humanity? I mean, you experience the end of it all. After you there is nobody else.. That seems sort of nice in some odd ways. Makes you feel a bit more significant I guess.
Plus you could look at it like there will not be anybody around afterward to mourn over your death. I guess that could be considered good or bad though depending on how you see it.

I basically connect this with philosophy because this could be a possible "end of the world". ^
Personally, I would hate to go with EVERYONE. It just gives me such a large sense of "ending" that really scares me. All of our advances and what not gone in an instant. I would much rather die while humanity lives on, mainly because if I were to contribute to the human race (such as scientific research that is used for centuries to come) I would die knowing that I was useful. Dieing with everyone else just makes life seem so pointless to me. I mean sure, dieing in the Apocalypse would be "cool" but it wouldn't be documented or remembered in anyway, and while a large wave of smoke and ash rushes toward you I doubt you would think "Fuck yeah! This is such an awesome way to die!". Sure we might not know if we will know anything of our current world once we die, and there is no correct way to think about the end... I lost where I was going with this >.<

Precisely, and I think many of the worries about being remember, making a difference, all the stuff humans ultimately want to achieve.. All hope of that is gone forever.
Because if the world ends next year, NOTHING will live on, NOTHING will have made a difference. As we humans have been isolated on our island in the cosmos for such a long time, we've failed to share our knowledge to anyone or anything. All the wonderful things that have happened on earth will be non-existent, because if no one knows, then it didn't happen.
It's the opposite of what people usually say, its live alone, die together..

See above.. I think the massive appeal of it for me, is that the signifigance of life on earthh is finally proved to be a myth.. We won't go down in the annals of the universe, we'll just be a life form that got fucked up by an asteroid..

I understand how you can view dieing all at once as a more comforting end for some people and how all of our knowledge would be for nothing. but I personally don't want to think of it that way. I mean if none of it matters, why should i keep going to school or continue having a job? I'm sure everyone wants to have had a meaning to the rest of the human world at somepoint in their lives, and a small amount may not. People may want an end, but why? If we have the capability to keep going as a civilization, then why not? Why just give up the thousands of years we've been working on improving technology? What are we even trying to achieve, other than to make life easier? Might we just continue advancing until machines and robots run us entirely and just like that, we die?
Away from that, as a stated before, I want humanity to prosper if only the smallest amount in the universe. I don't want to know the end of the world is coming and know that no one will make it. (Just a thought that came into my head; if we do go to heaven/hell, then obviously whatever happens to earth is god's plan and I probably shouldn't care as much since it's "written in stone").
But my main thought is: I don't want to know that all life and knowledge will end some day, and I don't want my death to be on that day if it does come.

I got a flash for ya joyboy, the human race doesn't have too long left if you ask me.. The way we've pursued technology as far as we can, not knowing the possible ramifications of our actions..
I went to this public lecture once, about progress traps in evolution. Like for example, a species of animal in some area gradually gets better and better at hunting, but then after a few generations of these amazing hunters, there's no prey left. They've become TOO good at hunting..
I think that our progress trap is evolution, and sooner or later (probably sooner), its all going to come to an end.. Be it robot takeover, some super disease created in a laboratory, or even global warming set off my carbon emissions, its going to happen some way..

Ah, weird you mention the bit about evolution fucking stuff over. I seen some stuff about it on the television today :o
Pretty interesting how it works, and yeah, it certainly does seem like we might be taking that path. The more adapted to any specific environment you become, the more it's going to hurt when a change is introduced. But I guess that's the simplest way to put it, and I think humans could overcome most environmental changes... But eh, not all.
But yeah, I think our intellect and curiosity will get the better of us someday. The only way I could see humanity really lasting for a LOOOONG time is if we were somehow able to colonize through the universe in time.. Basically setting up on numerous planets so that when we make one big fucking mistake, it doesn't have to affect everybody. (assuming we'd never be able to actually destroy the universe as a whole, which... Yeah, I doubt we could).
But shit.. As of now, that seems strictly science fiction.. And while it might be possible to colonize throughout the universe (which, the idea in general to me seems very interesting.. Can't imagine how that would affect culture and human behavior over time).. I'm pretty sure we wont make it far enough to have that 'chance'.
Oh.. And come to think of it.. If it's not technology first hand, it will probably be a disease. But then again, I guess that works with technology.. Because with how we are able to move so many people from so many places so fast now thanks to technology, pretty much nowhere is completely safe from any disease...

Religiously, there will apparently be a battle between God and Satan sometime in the future. According to revelation, "Woe to the inhabiters of the earth and sea for the devil is come down unto you, having great wrath because he knoweth that he hath but a short time". according to islam, the devil currently corrupts humanity by bringing down god wrath onto the world. Also according to islamic beliefs, the end of the world will be pproceded by two distinct catastrophies; a red death and a white death. "Before the Qa'im's rise two deaths will occur, one red and one white. These will kill five out of every seven persons. the red will occur through killing, and the white through epidemics. People believe this corresponds to revelations 4 horsemen of apacolypse. The red horsemen brings death by war, and the pale through sickness. So basically if a mass epidemic such as disease or famine occurs, that may mark the nearing of the end. and at this time, apparently, satan will start recruiting us for his army against god. in islam, muhammed told his people that "he will claim to be god and try to create doubts in your minds. have a firm belief, the one-eyed creature cannot be your lord... he will claim ot have come with gifts of paradise and an arsenal of hell. prior to this, jesus will return and lead his selected army into battle. this day, according to aztecs, isnt going to be like some big red guy comes from hell and starts this, they beleive it will be something less noticable such as a fog, that would lead to chaos and anarchy.
This whole battle become popular back in the fiftys when an elder told a minister is theory. "The white man will battle againsts other people in other lands, with those who possessed the first light of wisdom. there will be many columns of smoke and fire... will cause disease and a great dying"
this somewhat relates to us today, if you consider the US the white men, and the middle east as the people with the first light of wisdom, since we are at war over there. and since all life and major religions aparently came from the middle east.. yea theyr the first who saw the light..
this part here being the main relation to the point of this thread..
also according to the elders prophecy, there will be an astronomical event that "turns the sea black" and many will die from it. "you will hear of a dwelling place in the heavens, that will fall with a great crash.." obviously like a meteor. "it will appear as a blue star". and after this, according to the elder's prophecy, is when jesus returns and all that.
so, in a way, a meteor hitting earth is relative to religious theories

hm.. I remember some people referring to a "blue star" a while back. They weren't speaking of it as being a meteor. In fact I think it was supposed to be visible from pretty far away (think they were expecting it 2012-2014. And it wasn't discussed in the "omg the world will end in 2012" context either, just a coincidence)
Shit.. Now I really want to check that out again and figure out more about it. Didn't know it was referred to in any religions

But this "blue star" and "turning the sea black" is fairly vague..
Blue stars could mean a number of things, as could a black sea. This is why many predictions from long ago "ring true" in our society, because they're so applicable to many situations, and if you look far enough into different events, you could make almost anything fit..

I know, but it states that there will be an astronomical event after we begin fighting in the land that saw the first light. and right now, we are at war in that land. So in a way, we are following the prophecy. Apophis could possibly be the astronomical event following the fighting.

This is also assuming christianity is the correct belief system.. Not trying to start arguments, but ya know
