View Full Version : Help Me Decide on a Deck
I understand that all decks feel different to people, but I'm looking for a popular consensus. I'm going to be using this deck pretty much completely on halfpipes and pools. I'm stuck between a few decks. What do you guys think has a better feel and lasts longer? BTW If there's a board out there that has the best feel, but has shit durability, I'm okay with it.
I know it looks like I chose every large board out there, but I'm just giving a bunch of possible designs I prefer for the company recommendations I'll probably receive. I'm leaning towards the Toy Machine and Black Label, with the Plan B in third and the Santa Cruz in fourth only because it looks so fucking cool. I hear mixed reviews about Plan B's, but haven't heard any vert skater's opinions. How are they on ramps?

Also, which deck has a medium concave? I don't want something too curved, but don't want a flat board either.

the best out of those would be black label or santa cruz imo.

How's the concave and durability of the Santa Cruz? Is it a good vert deck or is it more suited for street skating?
Another thing I just thought of. I plan on trying all of these decks eventually, and would prefer to use the same trucks as they last me a long time, but the decks vary from 8.125 to 8.5. Would I be better off getting 139mm trucks, which are undersized for 8.5" decks, or should I go with 149mm's, which are oversized for the 8.125" decks? For the 8.25" decks, what truck size should I go with?

Santa cruz decks are the best quality out of the brands you mentioned IMO (even though I love both toy machine and black label, maybe my two favourite brands, definitely both in top 5, I just think santa cruz wood is better with more solid construction), out of the ones you linked to anti-hero and santa cruz both are about equal.
Shape probably depends on the individual deck, as does how street oriented or vert/pool oriented, but out of the brands in your links powell and santa cruz are the most known for tranny generally speaking, and just looking at the decks those 2 appear to be the most suited to what you're looking for.
Basically I'd go the santa cruz if I was you.

How about the Plan B? I'm not sure if the board is designed for vert since Danny Way's name is on it or if it's just hype.
If I sound like a noob here I am. Before my 4 year hiatus the only decisions I would make at a board shop were what board looked the coolest and what wheels and trucks would create a nice color scheme. Now that I have the mighty internet at my disposal, the choices have become pretty much limitless, and that makes buying a board a lot tougher than just picking out the coolest looking shit in the store.

I'm usually wary of weird shit like that claiming to be "lighter, thinner, stronger" prolite whatever, I don't know anything about this gimmick in particular, maybe it's legit? I don't know, but I would be very suspicious of it myself. If you're really skating pools and vert the last thing you'll need to worry about is weight and thinness of the board, so I don't see any reason for you to be drawn to that one really.
Generally plan b decks aren't especially great IMO, they're not bad, but santa cruz are better. I'd expect the santa cruz to be stronger than the plan b despite it's claims. Could be wrong.

I guess it's just Way's name that draws me to it. I never hear much good or bad about them and it's a bitch to find them in my area. I'm either going for the Santa Cruz or the 8.5" Toy Machine. About the trucks, for interchangeability between 8.125", 8.25", and 8.5" decks should I get 139's or 149's?

I don't know, it could be a legit technological advancement made specifically for danny way and his crazy huge stunts, in which case I'm sure it's awesome, but I'd be more confident going with the powell or santa cruz, you can rely on both of those being very solid pool decks.
As for truck size, I don't ever think about matching my deck size up with my truck size, I know some people do though.
I just like the trucks I like, and I like ace 33s (which are 139s), but having said that I'd be way more willing to go wider than I would more narrow.
Nothing worse than really narrow trucks.
I don't think it matters too much either way, whether you get 139s or 149s.
Actually I just went and had a look at my board, I've got 139s and they aren't as wide as my 8.125 deck, so you'd be pretty safe with 149s, I mean if having wheels sticking out beyond the sides of your deck is what you're worried about, they might JUST stick out the tiniest bit on an 8.125, maybe, nothing to worry about though.

You should get something from DLX (Real, Anti Hero, or Krooked) or you could get a Girl deck

go with the santa cruz. typically they are more of a vert board but i have seen them in the streets. also they are made of better quality wood and are more durable. and get 149s. 139s are exact with 8.0s so it would be smaller with all your decks. 149 would fit flush with your 8.25 but it would be a tad bit smaller for you 8.5 and a tad bit bigger for your 8.125. i would go with 149 IMO

No tre flipping on this board. It's going to be all grabs, grinds, and stalls.
I'm still stuck between the Toy Machine and the Santa Cruz. They both have pretty much completely positive opinions, while the way deck, in third place, is a Plan B, which is a love hate type company. I'm going to call around and see if local stores have any of these in stock so I can compare them in person.

oh shit i have that anti hero but 8.38!!! its so fucking good, nice board shape one of the best shaped boards that i have had.
if you are going to be doing grabs, grinds and stalls then get an Anti Hero its a park board. and thats why everyone on the team skates tranny
I decided to go local and get whichever of my choices was in my favorite skate shop. I walked out with the Toy Machine 8.5" with Bones SPF 58's, Super Swiss 6 ball bearings, Black Magic grip tape and Indy Stage 10 trucks.
I'm saving it for the halfpipe I'm building, but I tried it out real quick and it feels INCREDIBLE. I'm getting some tighter bushings though.

I never knew Bones made bushings, I'm make sure to get them. Sadly they only had Doh-Doh soft and medium bushings so I'm going to have to check Ig or Zumiez for some hard ones. I'm really excited about getting this ramp done so I can start skating this board. It's definitely not a street board, but I'm definitely into bigger decks now. When I break my street deck I'm going to replace it with an 8" or 8.125".
Get DLX.
Am I the only one here not obsessed with DLX? I skated a freind's Anti-Hero, it wasn't that good.

Even the guy at the board shop was on DLX's dick. Unless Krooked and Real are better than Anti-Hero, I don't get what the love is about.

The Anti-Hero I tried was a good board, don't get me wrong, but I didn't like the shape and feel of it. If I liked the shape I would probably get one though, as DLX are hella durable.

Exactly. Popular consensus of the feel and durability is a good start, but it all comes down to personal preference. Something an inventor and genius once told me, "Experimentation is the best process of elimination." Trying a deck is the best way to judge it and owning one is even better.

dude you just nailed it. everything you said was facts and completely true. whoever told you that knows what hes talking about. some people might love dlx boards while others dont. some people might hate girl while others love girl. it all comes down to trying it yourself and seeing which is right for you

That's a quote from Bob Gatzen, the guy responsible for the current sound of rock drums. I absolutely love my Toy, but when this breaks I'm going to try something else. Because who knows, I might find another company that suits me better.
