You should know that I'm not some emo sitting in his dark room cutting himself, or some depressed/angry kid who hates the world, but really when you think about it, what's the point of life? Seriously?

To gain memories of experiences you've had? Great that's cool. That doesn't mean SHIT when you die though.

Some people say it's about leaving a legacy of the things you do, for others to remember you by... but guess what? They're going to die too, so that doesn't mean much either.

Basically it comes down to this... I truly believe life can be that wonderful concept that people make it out to be. How amazing, beautiful, and miraculous it is. But it's like Life is a picnic, and Death decides be a prick and walks over to the picnic and begins teabagging people in the face while taking a piss all over the sandwiches and drinks.

your looking at life the wrong way. Were not here to leave a legacy were here to do something, but until we know what that is it's best just to enjoy each day as it comes and be happy that you can. Cos fuck knows whats after this.

That doesn't cut it for me, I mean I enjoy life. But in the back of my mind I'm thinking geez it sucks that I'll eventually die and don't know for sure what's next.

there really isnt a point to life
you just live, do what makes you happy, live how you want to live
you dont have to leave a legacy, you dont need people to remember you, all that matters is that you lived your life how you wanted, and thats it

thats how i see it at least

Wellll since you're mormon. You believe that this is just a temporary world in which you should preach gods name and live in his image as much as possible before moving on to experience eternal life with him!

Hmm, that would make sense... if I was a mormon. But since I'm not, it's kinda not helping me out. Thanks for the advice though.

u should start smoking weed. im not trying to make a joke or anything but seriously, u should. it will make u more positive and optimistic. its thoughts like these that lead to people contemplating suicide. and no one wants that

The one and only thing you have to accept in life is death. It is the one thing that we know nothing about (about the experience, that is)

but everything else is the world; you dont have to accept it.

death is the one and only thing out there that is truely immortal.

if that makes sense ;l

im saying that if you cannot accept that your gonna die, and you cant do anything about it, ever, forever, then your gonna be emo.

Looking at how lame it is but still accepting it doesnt qualify you as emo

if you live your life like you think you owe it to yourself to achieve something great, your kinda cheating yourself.

life is short, you just gotta do you, what makes you happy, what you think is best for you, make it happen.

just live.

I don't think the right question is "what is the meaning of life?".. I think there are many other more suitable questions which will be a lot easier due to relevance to your life.

There aren't too many real rules you have to follow in your time alive.. But there are a few threads that can be broken down into this topic, one of which was my "I can't tell you the meaning of life, but I can tell you...".

But yeah, I don't think the right question is "What is the meaning?"

edit-

But yeah, the only person that can really say anything about your life is yourself. So, you just have to spend your time doing what makes you happy, and what you personally feel is worth spending your life doing...

Yeah, that might sound like a cheap answer, but whatever.. I think it's about all we can do

Fuck it, my personal theory? There is no meaning to life. Life is random, life is impossible, life is ever so infinite; and therefore life is what you make it.

Life has no definition, so don't sit around trying to define it; the only thing you can do about life is what you do with it, so just do with it what you love.

Words of advice: life is filled with a beautiful futility that humans are cursed enough to acknowledge, so embrace the uselessness of it all; stop trying to find a reason for it and just fucking make one.

exactly. youre only wasting precious time worrying, just go do something fun, and realize that youve only got one life (that we know of), and that you should be enjoying it for as long as you can. that way you can (hopefully) die satisfied with what youve done

My philosophy on the purpose of life is to create art (which is a legacy that can never be undone even after death, when properly preserved), enjoy the current moment as best you can, become virtuous, discover deeper meaning, and set an example/make your world better for others. I guess that's a brief summarization, anyway.

I've thought about this many times before. I've decided the only real things I can do about it are:
Be as happy as I can be in my life
Have as much fun as I can in my life
Accomplish what I want to accomplish
Be a generally nice, morally-sound person. That way, if heaven exists, hopefully I'll get in. But then again, what if God only admits evil people to heaven and sends all good people to hell? I'll just have to find this one out when I die.

Oh, and if no God or afterlife exists, then I won't be able to care because I won't exist. So, in effect, I won't care.

That's a really good point. Even if it's not art, i suppose the greatest thing we can do with our lives it to be part of something bigger than ourselves.

Personally, i find art (music, literature, artwork) to be one of the most significant and profound forms of this.

Art is, essentially, a material depiction of human connection to our spiritual and emotional conscience. It is what we put in to it and, so long as it stays that way, it will always be more than just a thing.

What i fear, personally, as our technology becomes more and more proficient, is that soon the music we make will be so seamless that it won't matter what we put into it because no one will be able to take anything from it. Maybe music will someday just be made by machines that utilize preferable wavelengths to construct optimal compilations with no imperfections or controversial tones.

Sorry, got a little off topic. Maybe i should just start a thread on art...

Scientifically... i guess your right...

But when you think about life from a spiritual sense, then stating that the 'purpose of life is to reproduce' just doesn't cut it.
