View Full Version : SB-C Guitar Battle Round 2

Tony
05-01-2009, 02:42 AM
Ok so I'm hangover and my head hurts and I've been postponing the making of this thread for hella lot of time so here for guitar club.

We with the guitar club thought it's now time for SB-C guitar battle round 2, I couldn't find the round 1 thread to link it here but some of you gods might find it. Link plz?

The point is: All guitar players unite now, get in the battle, post a video, then we'll let the SB-C decide with a new thread where we vote who's gonna win. The rules:
-
The time you get to post your vid/recording is 2 weeks
The battle is open for everyone
Maximum video length 6 minutes
Videos are to be posted in this thread
-
The guitar players of SB-C: go!

Tony

Doesn't have to be original, only one video/recording per member, it CAN be:
-Your song
-Improv
-Cover
-something else, be creative.

I'll start

EDIT: Just watched yours Tony, awesome too. I can't really stand up to either but I'll still enter for sure. Should be fun.

Tony
05-01-2009, 07:27 AM
Yeah the main point here isn't winning, it's entering.

Andsd91 I had no idea we have a classical master like you here, I've been playing classical guitar for almost 7 years and I can honestly say that was amazing.

andsd91
05-01-2009, 07:54 AM
Thanks a lot to both of you! I've been playing classical for about 9 years. I have a great teacher.
Tony, you're actually great! Overall great tone, you're really fast and accurate. Impressive stuff!

Tony
05-01-2009, 08:08 AM
Thanks man, I had never heard Tanko en skai before your performance, really inspired me to learn it. I've been playing classical guitar for 6 years now, it'd be one hell of a stretch pushing my skills because of the fast arpeggios.

Guys get posting!

Although classic guitar doesn't appeal to me in the slightest, I have huge respect for anyone who can play at that standard, good job. You too tony, felt like it was missing something though..

I use a shit load of percussive techniques and finger strumming.

I don't think I'll be entering this one, though. First of all, my skills are still in the works (I'm decent now, but a lot of you guys would kill me), and also, I'm trying to get away from SB-C. I don't know for how long. Possibly forever. We'll see.

Also, I know you like Andrew Gornyish stuff, but whatever you want to play, you can man.

Andrew Gorny uses a lot of harmonics. I'm not good enough at them to incorporate them like that just yet.

For a better idea of my style, imagine a MUCH shittier/slower/sloppier version of something like this:
YouTube - John Butler Trio - Ocean (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6VAkOhXIsI0&feature=related)

combined with a shittier/slower/sloppier version of something like this:
YouTube - Guitar drumming with John Butler (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W9h5hjIZu7U)

combined with a few of my own... unique... percussive techniques.

And at this point, imagine all of that in standard tuning with no barre chords (still working on transitioning to those dame barre chords. I can do them, just not quickly.)

I'm willing to do audio recordings, I don't have a video camera but I can record a tease of something specific to prove that it's me playing (consensus can choose if you like, so long as I can learn to play it). I'll probably improvise over a drum track, if I can come up with something decent.

I know a few were off, especially when you get pretty high up in the 16,17 fret area. I'm pretty satisfied I managed to record it. I was bummed though, I played it flawless one time, and the camera died halfway through, and of course, I couldn't get it great after that, but hey, atleast you guys saw it. Yeah there was some delay, it was hard to hear, I'm using a very very shitty amp, and I really want to buy some various pedals and a tube amp to actually play more floyd stuff, that's all I want to play really, that bluesy type stuff.

Eh, did this.

YouTube - SB-C Guitar Batol - Firedance (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wkn_oBk6I44)

First 2 min is the intro, only just learned 3:14 - 4:00 a couple of days ago so not crash hot at that bit yet. Was recorded first attempt, a bunch of screw ups about the place but still pretty happy that I can make it through the song somewhat.

The song is a version of Firedance by Bill Whelan that I slightly re-arranged. Its one of my favourite songs in terms of strange-but-effective time signatures, the main bit goes 7, 7, 6, 7, and the 6 is in triplets, hence the desperate counting with the fingers in the middle part to stay in time. I tabbed the new bit (3:14-4:00) by ear, the rest was learned like a year ago when I had the tabs somewhere, but half of it is still re-tabbed because of not remembering the positions.

Andsd91 should learn it and make it sound awesome haha.

Andsd91 should learn it and make it sound awesome haha.

i really like that a lot, nice job man! i think i'll give it a shot sometime

this is the second part to a song i wrote. the first part is kinda boring so i left it out. it isnt anything hard, but i like it.
also, couldnt hear the backing track well, so i go off time at the end a bit. oh well.

That's not fake either, have a listen to what you're judging (and gather from that what you like).

I'll record some improv in a few minutes. My power supply is fucked so no distortion, so you guys get to hear my (attempt at) clean jamming today.

Yeah, it's pretty fun. The timing means that, unless you are awesome at counting, the whole thing has to flow off each other which is good.

I really liked that. The style of the main riff I like in general because of its atmosphere, and the bit that goes from there up to the first bend.

Roboman-that was great, lul at the end.

Jp- I really really liked that.

Marevix- As soon as the vocals came, I wanted to exit it, but I didn't. I tried to listen to it in a musical sense, but I still don't like it at all. The solo redeemed the kinda lame, hip hop ish little jam thing they had going on in the back.

I just don't like that, or anything else I have heard from them. The same goes for nirvana, I have my opinions, and you and I have talked about Floyd before, and we disagree about a lot of things, so I think you and I have totally different feelings about music.

Haha finally someone else appreciates MFKR. Pretty much the only slipknot album that can be appreciated and not just jammed.

Well that slipknot song was weird: clean guitar bass very loud, nu metallish vocals, wat.

I can't say I didn't like it at all, really.

Erk, I wasn't being a grammar nazi, I genuinely didn't know whether you thought it was a good song or not...? I assume you meant like "I can't say I liked it at all." but I wasn't sure. Sorry.

I'm really debating posting anything at all because I'm so inconsistent, there are very few things I can play at speed and I can't play anything in it's entirety.

Is it okay if I just post me just fucking around?

Of course you will if you do it enough out of passion, and not out of the will to compete with other players. Just play music really all-rounded, like from death metal through etno rock to blues and ending with jazz, you'll be awesome some day trust me.

Not that I can speak from experience but I think that's how it goes hahaha
