just wondering what types of solos everyone likes. do you like blues/pentatonic licks or sweep picking? melody or shredding? solos using crazy sounds? or do you not like solos at all?

just give me a sec, i'm gonna put up a poll. and yea you can pick more than one

Most people are like "ew why do you like them?" haha.
But you know how their solos are fast and melodic. That's what I like. I'm not sure if most people would count it as shredding.

avenged sevenfold sucks.

I like wah and killswitch in solos.

Generally I'd rather there just not be solos but if there are they should at least be interesting, therefore weird sounds/noises definitely.

the only solos i like are the solos in GBH's "bell end bop"

anything by buckethead

I think the basis of a solo is a melodic theme that connects with the content of the music, so I guess good melody/feeling. I do think fast runs and arpeggios can apply with that however (and sometimes enhance it).

whatever children of bodom/kalmah/norther plays. there are a lot of solos i really hate, but i love most of the aforementioned bands solos. they gotta be fast, and melodic.

Ones that fit in flawlessly with the rhythm and everything else going on. So many solos tend to sort of ignore what the rest of the band is doing.

Aka this, December Flower by In Flames. This video is just the solo:
Faaaavourite guitar solo ever. Every change in the rhythm is reflected in the lead. The harmonies at 0.29 just blew my mind when I first heard it, they are different somehow.

Second favourite solo, Fly Away by the Living End:

Couldn't find the real version, so heres some guy playing it. Its the second one in the video. Sounds so cool nonetheless.

the solo to the nail. it starts at around 3:40 until the end basically. amazingness.

I like stuff like this solo
I can't explain it I guess its just how it sorta meshes with the song but then it goes along with it. 1:31-2:02 but thats just me

When we play, in the middle of a solo of any type I look at the audience to see if there's a huge wave of chicks coming... I guess we'll have to get better first.

Feedback, reverb, delay, heavy chorus, use of household objects to make bizarre sounds, fucking with the pickups, killswitch, guys yelling into their pickups.

Wierd noises.

Lately I've been turning the chorus and reverb all the way up, plugging in the old cry baby, and playing ONLY the major scales.

I hate shredding.

02-15-2009, 09:17 AM
Mindless shredding on a guitar is just annoying, i like something creative.

about 2 minutes in it gets really good

My favorite guitar solo (coming from a drummers perspective).

02-15-2009, 09:52 AM
i like alot of different things. a good variation of shred, melodic sweeps and nicely timed bends makes for one hell of a solo.

as for blues solos, penatonics and good timing is key.

i hate stupid tom morello scratching bullshit solos. fuck it isnt even guitar

edit: plus dual solos like alexi laiho does in COB

02-15-2009, 10:37 AM
i think sweeping and shredding sounds cool but too much is too much, i like a good over all feel and melody,

02-15-2009, 10:50 AM
i really like sloppy high end solos like the ones old thrash metal bands do and i also like weird ass stupid noise solos that you hear every so often in hardcore punk.

anything by buckethead

this, fucking love buckethead.

And solo's where you can get a strong emotion from them are good. Thats the mark of a great guitar player.

Roboman put it perfectly.

Its got to be a living/breathing thing. It cant just be some guy soloing for the sake of it.

My idea of a bad solo would be umm, the one off of "all summer long" by kid rock. Its not horrible or anything, but its dry, unoriginal, and just seems to kind of sit there without adding anything to the song.

A good solo would be the one off of sultans of swing-Dire Straits. The whole song builds up to it, and it is just magnificent.

I'm really a fan of solo finger style and that kind of stuff. There really aren't any solos, but some songs sound like the whole thing is.

John Petrucci combines strong melody with the SHREDZ. Here's a compilation of solos from LTE.

depends on the song.

i usually don't like solos in metal that are penatonic, considering a lot of them are

I like solos in blues that are slow and rhythmic

but in metal I looove good creative sweeps like wintersun and nevermore

or solos that are slow like amon amarth that blend with the music and don't just go over a lame back rhythm

a lot of "shred" solos are kidna lame though, like especially hair metal where it's some lame power chords then the required solo that's all this gay bending and stuff yea

01-04-2010, 10:49 PM
I like solos that match the feeling of the song like hide from X Japan always played.

01-04-2010, 10:50 PM
It depends.. A lot of the time I don't really care a whole lot for solos.. But when I do, I either go for the crazy shredding with the occasional sweeps.. Or the more relaxed kinds that will likely fit in with the rest of the song melody and such (I know some do all three, but it's rare from what I've listened to. But I don't listen to a lot of solos).

Here lately I've really liked synth solos more than guitar solos.. But I guess they're different enough to not take into consideration when answering the poll.. But god, I have to mention how good the solo in this is:
YouTube - Daft Punk - Digital Love (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FxzBvqY5PP0)
(2:55 if somehow you haven't heard this already)

One of my favorites. The solo bit from Ratatat's 17 years is really good too (though that's guitar, not synth)

early Slayer records list who is solo'ing at certain parts of each song, as if King & Hanimann get more royalties based on how many solo's per song?!?

I love Slayer - but always found that funny on the lyric sheet.

since im not good at explaining, ill just say that my favorite solo is the one at the end of "said the People" by Dinosaur Jr. its one of the best ive heard in a while. yea, basically just stuff with a good melody, not extreme shredding, but that can be good too it depends on the song i guess, if it fits with the song its good no matter what style it is. okay i guess i explained a little...
