My brother and I were discussing this. He thinks the Muse, but I think Streetlight Manifesto.

What is the most original band that is still around today(In your mind)?

Pink Floyd did some shit that was very ahead of their time, mostly in the late 60s/early 70s - they're sort've still around, if inactive and w/ a different lineup.

Live 8? O'Rourke's funeral? They've played, although I suppose there haven't been any proper tours or releases since the Division Bell tour. The fact that Waters is still performing The Wall & Dark Side, and that Gilmour/Wright are still collaborating, makes things a bit too ambiguous to define as absolute inactivity.

Live 8 I wouldn't count as back together since it was for one occasion and the first time Waters was back since the 80s. Gilmore it touring for his own work mostly since On an Island album just came out two years ago. Waters is an asshole and I could care less about him.

So the band technically isn't together sinces the eary 90's.

the White Stripes are kind of original. Not many blues/rock bands as popular as them.
Gorillaz are pretty different, but they're mostly rap so i don't know if that counts as a band.
Ima robot is kind of different, but not the most original, mostly just weird.
the left rights are definitely original, but I don't think they're even a real band...

Being fair, Matt's guitar techniques are very interesting, the guy is definitely pretty original, very creative. I can see how they couldn't be winnars of an award such as "Mod Original Band" though, especially if its not confined to the past decade.

To the OP, Streetlight Manifesto? Are you crazy? They'd not be in my top 50 more original bands!

In the past century (IE Music post-electricity), Pink Floyd would win for me, followed be The Beatles, and then Led Zep.
I know, i know... They're the 3 more obvious bands i could have named, but they're the most obvious for a reason.

More original band in the past 10 years for me, Mr Bungle.
Or maybe somebody from the chiptune scene.

Vivica! Have you heard of Estradasphere? Absolutely insane genre-benders, if you like the direction Bungle went with California, these guys went been there and just kept going. Songs like gypsy-lounge-metal with chunks of disco and surf rock, orchestral spaghetti-western music with traditional eastern and techno, heavy rock with polka influences mixed with insanely fast bluegrass... its worth a listen.

How are they the most original? They took a genre that already existed, which was already derived from other genres in the first place, and then did a parody of it. :)

Incubus, because none of their albums sound the same. Brandon Boyd doesn't have to be an emo bastard or a screaming lunatic. He sings with a voice that's his, not someone else's hes trying to immitate. Muse is ok in originality, they are a shit load better than most things today. Rush is good. Umm, radiohead too.

I freaking love Mr. Bungle. We're doing Ars Moriendi for our drumline show. It's so tight.

I just think that Streetlight has a very original sound, far different from all other modern ska.

^ I don't find them an original sounding ska band, unlike Skoda or of course TSPO.

And yes, Mike Patton has to be one of the most original musicians. Because of that, most of his stuff are just too weird for me to listen to on a daily basis, but I like most of the albums he's been involved in.

pinkeh
03-23-2008, 02:01 PM
Ahhh as much as I love Streetlight, I don't really find them to be THAT original in their sound. Sure, they have a unique sound compared to a lot of other ska bands, but to be perfectly honest I don't consider streetlight to be like straight up ska, since they have so many other elements in their music. I'm not sure if that makes sense at all, but hey I tried.

Like, as a SKA band, I wouldn't say streetlight is all THAT amazing, but as a band in general, they're fucking great.

I'm fucking confusing.

Too bad battles is just shitty math rock.

Uhh what the fuck is the relevance of this? Just because you don't like them how does that detract from them being original? I'm pretty sure everyone knows they are math rock, but compare them to other math rock bands in terms of how they create their music and what they use, it's quite different and original.

Bloc Party

I think their music is a nice change and much more original than a lot of popular music out there, but I don't think they are that original. Especially the guitar and drums, Russell and Matt both create drum and guitar lines which I think are awesome and really fun to play along to, but whenever I listen to them I always get that feeling that I have heard 'it' somewhere else. Especially with the drums, Matt said he was influenced a lot by the British club music or something like that and you can really tell. Some of his beats are just basic ones with minor alterations, or at least I think, like on "She's Hearing Voices", "Banquet" and "Helicopter" for example. I mean they sound awesome, but I just don't think they are that original. Just my opinion obviously though. For popular music though, yes very. Still one of my favourite bands, Russell is such a sick guitarist.
