7 ply IS regular...i think once u add more plywood its just gonna get heavier
regular=7 ply
some companies have 8 plies out...like darkstar armour ply. It's 7 wood with a center carbon composite.
That's really the only instance i can think of...and the carbon composite gives it more pop which to me would outweigh the extra weight. But yes, the extrta wood (or in this case carbon composite) weighs it down more.

wal mart=10ply
element=9ply
ccs=8 ply
flip=7 ply
popwar=6
honestly ive skated with all these, and the less plys(in this case) is assueredly the best. my kflips are a foot and a half high, on demand, and clean with a nice popwar-based setup. get a popwar and some nice independent stage nine trucks, no matter wheels, bearing, grip, etc., but the ind. and popwar make a pretty light, smooth wispy deck. even for a 6 ply theyre pretty tough to break.

If your talking about an Almost 8 ply epoxy, the yes they are great. No matter who on this site tells you they suck and have no pop, they are fucking wrong. Almost is a great choice.
