How do you play bass? When I started I used a pick, cause it seemed easier (and I think it is), but later changed to using my fingers, cause I like the sound more and have more control over it.

i like pick for punk, alternative, metal ect... and pluck for softer songs, and where the bass is just a base for the song, not a solo.

in my hardcore band i use a pick, in my metalish band i pluck. i do a healthy combination of both.

I'm a guitarist first and bassist second, so of course I have more control/dexterity with a pick. I play fingerstyle when I can, but most of the music I play can't be done without a solid four-finger technique (or very very fast two finger - I possess neither).

Both of course. It depends on what style of music I am playing and the sound I am going for. Tool with a Pick! Disturbed with Fingers!

fingers, i think you get a more bassy sound and when i need to go fast for my hardcore band i just use three fingers and play triplets, a pick isn't bad but it would be a good idea to develop your hand technique

^Yeah fingers defiantly sound better and give it deeper sound then a pick. And using three fingers took me a while to get used to and I figured out i can use 2 as fast as I use three so i don't bother anymore.

Picks when your first playing are much much much easier for beginners. But don't take the easy way out, you will regret it in the future unless you play quite a bit and get both playing styles comphortable.

Yeah that sucks, I know how it feels. But when I first started playing bass, I plucked and did songs with loads of slides in them and both my hands fingers had blisters, it sucked.

blisters are just part of it, they'll be calluses in a few days though so the strings wont hurt your fingers anymore, just endure it cuz callues are sweet

ALL the best bass players play with fingers.

That's right, even the metal ones I think. Triplets with three fingers are easy, but some can play anything like that with a lot of precision, I could never coordinate my fingers like that.

Well Geddy Lee isn't actually metal but progressive rock, he plays with fingers and is fucking ace, John Myung is progressive metal player and he plays with fingers too. Playing with fingers gives you much more that bass sound.

I use what the person in the song uses.

If I'm playing something I made or Riskit made, I'll use fingers.

A tip to the guys using both: When I first got into finger playing I had grown some nails, it's pretty cool to play finger style and throw in a pick accent whenever you feel like it.
