At least a third of those aren't metal, and for fuck's sake, Tenacious D has a movie.

By mainstream standards, these bands are unheard of/amazing:
Wintersun
Ensiferum
Kalmah
early Norther
Bathory
Immortal
Manic Butcher
Destruction
Deicide
Disgorge

Those bands are being played all the time. They are everywhere. Not that that is bad, they just aren't underground whatsoever.

Maybe where you are, not here at all.

Anyway, look up Karnivool! I really highly reccommend these guys, they are my favourite hard rock band by a long mile. They were so good I saw them live twice within a week haha. Heavy, but really intelligent and melodic. I have no idea how they are going for overseas, but they have a decent following in Aus.

Now some random bands which could be of any genre.

The Most Serene Republic - Very talented 6-piece from Canada. Some of the most complex songwriting I've ever heard, although all the stuff they have recoreded so far is shit compared to the album they are about to release. Somehow through a chain of people I have a leaked version. Definitely gonna buy it when it comes out.

Alamaailman Vasarat - Finnish band I think, they decided to create a hard rock band that doesn't use guitars. So they use saxaphone, pump organ, two cellos and other strings etc. Cellos with distortion are heavier than guitars, but they have a very 'jewish' sound to a lot of songs. So people may think you are weird for listening to it. I am so I don't much care.

Check out Incubus' first album 'Fungus Amongus' because its COMPLETELY different all the stuff they make nowadays. They are a mainstream band, but nearly everyone overlooks the early stuff when Dirk lance was still in the band. Psychopsiclocybin is a fucking awesome song.

65daysofstatic are my favourite band. Post rock meets glitch electronica. The first album 'the fall of math' is downright incredible. Very very loud. But not in a distorted guitar way. Just loud.

Pelican are an epic, "flat and arid" sounding instumental metal band. Slow and heavy and cumbersome, but sort of melodic. Real atmosphere about them. I found it hard to sit through an album though.

Assorted Jellybeans... fun punk. They had one song in the soundtrack of THUG, but still nobody knows about them where I'm from. They probably hit it big elsewhere, but I really like them.

Finally... Fantomas! Get the album 'Suspended Animation'. I'd describe the genre as "Cartoon-metal on every know mind-altering drug on the planet, but mostly speed". Most people find it way too wierd to listen too, but its very entertaining. I wouldn't say they are underground, but they are often disregarded or just not listened to because of their wierdness.
