What is your perception of the term "emo" these days?

What is emo today? Is it a fashion statement? Is it just polo shirts, torn jeans, and ruffled hair? Or is it a genre? Has emo lost it's emotion? Has it left it's essence in flight to the A & F generation? Or is it a genre of music?

I love this genre of music, it's awesome. Sometimes I just wonder though, what the heck is going on? I believe it's both a genre of music and a fashion statement. But it seems to be becoming more of a fashion statement, I can see it now. "The A & F emo sweater collection".

I don't like criticizing people at all, this is just what i've observed and brought it to these boards in hope of feedback.

These days its only a fashion. Its turning into a new insult as well. Soon everyone is going to replace gay with emo, so everyone will just say "Thats so emo" unstead of "Thats so gay". Its stupid. I don't know what it is, besides its fashion and trends.

Personally I picture it as grunge with a more downer feel. But modernly speaking, its nothing more than a trend.

Well, very few kids (in my observation) are actual emos. They listen to the music and dress it, but really arn't.

It's the posers that are making it a fashion statement. I myself like the emo genre, but it has turned a couple of my friends into something they aren't. All they talk about is what they got from Hot Topic and The Night Before Christmas.

To me, emo is a fashion thing, a very homo/metero sexual fashion at that. I hate it, and the music is horrible to me as well.

emo has lost its emotion. the old original emo band are magnificent. 98% percent of people who call themselves emo dont even no what the hell it really is. and 99.9% of people who make fun of emo dont know what the hell it really is. get it out of your head that emo is about wrist cutting and sucide because its not.

I dont think you described EMO very well, d_n_b_and_d_u_b..I think you were thinking more along the line of the whole prep thing..

But any way, the emo genre of music isn't bad. And no I mean REAL emo, and I feel dumb saying it too because its so covored up but shit like simple plan..I always was into some real stuff like everclear(my fav. band)
