A Visit to Grandmother

2. What is the reason Chig's father, Carles, gives for visiting Chig's grandmother?

Charles says he is going down to the area for a class reunion and he says he might as
well stop by his mothers house to meet her.

3. What reasons does Charles give for leaving home when he was fifteen?

Charles says he wanted to get a good education and none of schools in his area
allowed negros to attend.

4. What is Charles's reaction to the story that Mama tells about the hourse?

Charles is angry because it is a story where GL made a mistake that could have
been fatal but Mama just laughed at the situation but if it had been Charles instead of GL, Mama
would have beat him hard.

6. Why is there "fear, uncertainty, sadness, and perhaps even hatred in Charles's eyes when he
kisses his mother?

Charles does not like his mother because of the childhood he has experienced with her.

7. Describe Charles's attitude toward GL.

Charles does not like GL because Mama always favored him and GL never got in trouble
where on the other hand Charles could do the slightest thing wrong and be beat.

8. Why is GL the center of attention?

GL is the center of attention because he is always getting in trouble and they think if
they give him positive attention he won't go out and con people and get in trouble.

9. Why do you think Charles has not visited his mother before? What draws him back now?

I think he hadn't visited her before because he never had a perfect opportunity like he had
now because of the reunion. I think he is going because he thinks his mom will be dieing soon
or because he's wondering if she has changed.

10. What do you think Charles's relationship with his mother will be like in the future?

I think they will never speak again.

Critical Thinking
What inferences about the characters can you make from the following statements?

1. Mama: "Only time I'll need help getting anywhere is when I dies and they lift me into the ground."

I think it is saying that Mama is an indepdent person and can do everything on her own
until she dies.

2. Charles: "...spoke only when he was spoken to...as if by coming back home he had
become a small boy again"

This is saying that in Charles's childhood he was not very talktative and was especially
not talkative to his mother.

The Masque of Red Death

3. Why do Prince Prospero and his followers retreat to his palace?

Prince Prospero and his followers are escaping a plague called the “Red Death”.

4. Describe the series of rooms in which the entertainment takes place.

There is a blue room with blue stained glass. There was a purple room that had purple ornaments and tapestries. The third room was green throughout. The fourth had orange. The fifth was white and the sixth was violet. The seventh was black and red and that one contained a loud clock that rang every hour.

5. Explain how the party is disrupted.

The party is disrupted when a man that is “dressed up” in a costume of a diseased body comes in.

7. What do you learn about Prospero from his desire to keep his palace free of the plague?

He seems to be careful not to get the plague but he is also selfish because he doesn’t try to help any of the villagers out by securing them from the Red Death.

8. What mood or effect is created by the colors and lighting in the rooms of the ball?

Six of the rooms seem to be energetic rooms and the seventh room that is red and black is very scary because that’s the room with the clock in it.

11. Explain how Poe builds terror in the story.

Poe builds terror in the story by describing the uninvited guest that has come to the party and when he says Prospero died.

12. Ugo Betti has written, “every tiny part of us cries out against the idea of dying, and hopes to live forever.” Explain whether you think Poe would agree.

I think Poe would not agree because he seems as if he enjoys the concept of his own death because of the life he had led and the type of stories he wrote.

Understanding allegory

1. What might each symbol from “the Masque of the Red Death” represent?

A. Prince Prospero-A lucky prosperous person
B. The masquerade-Division of higher and lower class
C. Masked figure-death creeping up
D. The number 7-Luck and prosperity of Prince Prospero
E. The clock- Every time it rings it means a death has been tolled

2. What is the allegorical lesson in the story?

If you are prosperous then you should help others out and not just yourself.

Through the Tunnel

5. Describe Jerry’s relationship with his mother at the beginning of the story. How does it change by the end of the story? Cite specific instances in the story that helped you form your opinions.

At the beginning of the story he wants his mother to think he’s mature so he wanders off to another beach when his mom goes to her calm beach. Towards the end of the story Jerry decides he’d rather just take it easy and go with his mother to a calm beach therefore Jerry begins to think like his mother more.

6. What must Jerry prove to himself by swimming through the tunnel?

He is trying to prove to himself that he has a great swimmer and that he is grown up mentally to go through the tunnel.

7. Jerry experiences both external and internal conflicts as he swims through the tunnel. Explain both his conflicts.

Jerry experiences an internal conflict because he is able to swim under water for 120 seconds, and when he gets to 115 he stays there for a very long time because he is afraid that if he keeps counting to 120 then he will end up drowning. An external conflict he experienced was the pointy rocks that he kept hitting with his back.

8. There are both literal and figurative aspects to the title. Explain both.

The literal meaning of the tunnel is speaking of Jerry’s goal to go “through the tunnel” in the sea. The figurative meaning is that Jerry is trying to get through a stage in his life where he feels he needs to work at overcoming.

9. How has Jerry changed in the course of this story? Why is going to the bay “no longer of the least importance”?

Going to the bay is no longer important because he has achieved his goal of going through the tunnel. At the start of the story he thinks it is amazing that the other boys go through the tunnel but he soon finds out that it is no big deal and is pointless.

10. Why do many young people set up situations in which they challenge themselves? Give some examples.

Young people set up challenges to show their courage to their peers. In extreme sports, people challenge themselves to do bigger things so no one else can top it and they will always be remembered. In skateboarding people try to throw themselves down bigger and bigger stair-sets all the time. The person who does the largest will usually become well known.

Analyzing literature

3. In what ways does the atmosphere affect your expectations when Jerry starts swimming through the tunnel?

The author uses descriptive terms such as “pointy rocks” to show that it is very dangerous. This makes the reader think that Jerry will not make it out alive.
