Backside Shove it Rewind

By Iskatehard at 2009-07-11 21:40

Introduction

The backside shove it rewind has become personally one of my favorite tricks. With a little style, it looks absolutely amazing. And it's not incredibly hard to learn, either... In case you're wondering, this trick is the act of doing a regular backside shove it, and when you land back on the board you land directly into doing a nose pivot, rotating the board back around in the opposite direction it just spun. You will be finishing this trick in switch.

What You Need to Know

Tricks You Should Know:

Considering a good bit of this trick is the simple act of doing a regular backside shove it, you'll need to know these.. But remember, when learning this trick, you're not really going to want to put a lot of pop to it, but rather keeping it a simple backside shove.

Other Skills:

Since you're going to be finishing this trick with a nose pivot, you should practice doing a few of those and make sure you got them down. They're not terribly hard by any means, though, so that shouldn't be much of a problem for you. Also, you will want to be somewhat comfortable riding in switch, since you'll end up in this stance.

What You May Find Useful:

Knowing how to do backside pop shove its are really important here.. But since this trick isn't really going to be "popped" when learning it, go ahead and practice spinning some shoves without popping the tail, just in case you haven't already. Shouldn't be too hard to figure out, though.

Doing The Trick

Positioning:
  • The back foot
The back foot needs to be positioned just as if you were going to be doing a backside pop shove it. Remember, though, you're not really going to be popping this trick. Taking that into mind, you can move this foot around a little bit if you'd like, just as long as you can still use it to spin a backside shove it.

  • The front foot
Really, the placement of your front foot is mostly up to your preference. I know some people who prefer the front foot in the middle for this trick, even. I personally would suggest that you place the front foot just about an inch behind the front bolts, with very little angle to it.
Motion:

Give yourself a few pushes to get a little bit of speed, and set your feet up.

  1. Remember, you're not really going to be popping your tail for this trick, but rather just sweeping it, if you know what I mean. Considering this, you don't really need to bend down much to get this one started.

  2. Begin the backside shove it motion with a slight sweep from your back foot. Make sure you stay over your board completely, of course.

  3. You should be over your board watching it spin. As it finished up and you're about to land on it, focus on the nose of your board, and plan to land with your front foot on it, with your back foot landing on the back bolts.

  4. As you land back on your board, put a decent bit of pressure on the nose of the deck with your front foot. Of course, for this trick to really go down properly, you're not going to want your back wheels touching the ground, so make sure you put enough pressure on the nose to keep them up.

  5. As soon as you land and have proper pressure applied to the nose, begin a nose pivot, bringing the board back around in the opposite direction from which is came. And note that this pivot motion is going to come from your whole body, not just your legs. Make sure as you pivot back around, you're keeping your body directly over the board.

  6. Finish up the pivot, and level your board out on the ground. You're going to be riding in switch now, so make sure you take that extra effort to stay over your deck when you're riding away.
Video Trick Tips:

Troubleshooting

This is a fun little trick. If you're finding yourself having problems with it, go ahead and spend some time trying to fix it up.

  • I don't do the pivot directly upon landing. My back wheels touch the ground, and there's a pause before I do the pivot..
This is a pretty common problem, so don't stress it if you're not doing it all smooth right of the bat. If this is a problem for you, you need to focus on applying more pressure onto the nose of the deck upon landing. If you lose balance upon landing like this, consider practicing nose pivots/nose manuals a bit.

  • I have a hard time landing with my foot directly on the nose, so I can't really get a clean pivot
It's pretty damn hard to pull this off if you're not set up to do the pivot. If you have this problem, consider trying to get your body a little higher over the board, giving you more time to spot your landing on the nose.

  • Upon doing the pivot, I lose control of my board and fall off
If this problem is happening, you need to focus more on staying over your board. Make sure when you're doing the pivot, you're not just forcing it around with your legs. You have to have your upper body lined up with it also. If you're having a hard time determining if you are keeping your upper body lined up or not, pay attention to your shoulders. They should stay parallel with the deck the entire time.

That should do it. This isn't an incredibly technical trick, so play with a little bit and just have fun. Don't stress it too much if you're having a hard time getting this one down, it'll come to you in time and practice. Good luck.

Where Do I Go From Here?

Figuring out this "rewind" maneuver can really open up a lot of doors in terms of tricks. Maybe you think you could do a varial kickflip and land with the rewind? Or hell, a 360 flip? What I'd personally suggest trying, as I find it incredibly fun and think it looks amazing, is trying to get the rewind motion BEFORE you land on the ground. Get a high pop shove, and upon catching it, do the rewind motion on your way back down to the ground.. But remember, it's a lot more trickier than the method described above, so keep at it. Again, good luck with it all.
